putting headers on my truck

I have a 84 c35 2wd and im wondering if when i put my headman LTH on my truck is i can just use stright pipe from the headers to the mufflers. i'm trying to avoid bending or doing anyhting crazy (like cutting the cross member) as i want to keep it low budget and im doing the work my self.

Re: putting headers on my truck

long headers should put you low enough to run under the crossmember atleast without alot of bending, if your stopping at the back of the cab with the muffler you shouldent need alot of pipe.

Re: putting headers on my truck

No you will not be able to straight pipe them from the headers. depending on what crossmembers you have on mine on the passenger side I needed a very tight radius from the header which could only be custom made. Do yourself a favour spend the money and have it done. Exhaust is for the exhaust experts only. They can do it faster and cheaper than you can.

Re: putting headers on my truck

i bought pipes and mufflers from summit to go with my heddmen long tubes that came on my truck. after a few cuts and welds everything went together great. unless your truck came factory with dual exhaust (more then likely it didnt) you will have to lenthen the s-bend like i did

this is a screen shot of what i got

and this is what i ended up with

Re: putting headers on my truck

Any decent exhaust shop should be able to run complete set up for 300.00

Re: putting headers on my truck

Mock up the headers and look. My '86 I was able to go from the headers directly into the factory duals. (bbc, turbo 400)
Collectors into a couple of adapters, then into the pipe. Left side I did have to cock the adapters to make the fit (header collector pointed up) but it has about 4' of straight pipe before the mufflers.

You can also get offset fittings if you have to re-position the exhaust pipe.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

No pics, I tried to snap some, but it was just light enough that I couldn't get the flash to pop. (pics are very dark.)

I lied also, they don't run straight to the mufflers (upon looking again) They are similar to the pic cory d posted, except my straight pipe is off the collector and the kick-ups are just before the muffler, kinda following the frame bends. I can try to get a clearer pic tomorrow. Mine are configured to run over the rear axle, so maybe that is why the mufflers are where they are.

Re: putting headers on my truck

I have headers on my '86 with a th350 tranny and found that they do need a slight bend right after coming out of the header (with flow-techs) might be different with yours. i just mocked up what I needed with a piece of wire and brought it to a local exhaust shop and they bent it to match the wire, worked great actually. then just through some glass pack mufflers on it and 2 turn downs. worked great as a temporary exhaust anyway, costed about 50 bucks as I already had the mufflers and headers

Re: putting headers on my truck

Do you have a double hump in the tranny x-member as some do for duel exhaust clearance. Located about an 1" away from the frame.
Save your money and do it right take it in and get it done right. Or if you got a mig welder and a cutoff saw then you could do it yourself. Don't use clamps, they always leak and cut the life in half on your system.

why not mount every thing (headers, pipes & mufflers) then let the shop just make the pipes to connect it

just a thought it would save you some cash since you have done 95% of the work

I hate the exhaust on my truck the one over and one under is just stupid, i'm going to change the cross member and have it redone at some point

Re: putting headers on my truck

One of the pics you may be able to get what you need. (hopefully)

Drivers side is actually fairly close to the cross member. I believe that's the dent you see in the pic. pipe is somewhat "flattened" out. To be fixed at a later date. Both pipes do run under the cross member (fwiw, it is a double hump)
Not that it matters much, but exhaust pipe was shielded, I just cut the shielding off to make it easier to work on.
