350 or 700r4? Which Transmission ??

350 or 700r4?

Im trying to put a drive train together. I have a stock SB350 going in, and a THM350 as well. Im wondering if I should just go withe the 700r4.

Id like to be comfortable on the highway as well.

I havent bought a rear end yet either.

What do you guys think. Do I really need the 700r4 or will my 350 be just fine?

Either tranny is good in it's own respect as to what your looking for it to do. I prefer the 700r4 because of my rear gear ratio, and want to just cruise on the freeway and not rev my engine high like with the TH350. I checked to see which is more cost effective to change and the tranny was cheaper.

Remember that the 700 is an overdrive trans, with T/C lock up and 4th gear electronically controlled. Be sure to either get one that has been converted or pop for the conversion kits.

4th gear isn't electronically controlled. the wiring is just for the torque converter lockup and can be wired with a switch and a relay. no expensive kit needed

Overdrive all day long. Do whatever it takes.
I have a overdrive trans in my '65 mustang, and don't know how long I will be able to keep the 4spd manual in my pickup when I start driving it more. the benefits of that extra gear are tremendous. If your not hot on top speed you can drop your gear ratio for better acceleration, or just enjoy cruising at 65mph at something like 2300rpm

use the technology and spend the money now if you can afford to, you won't be sorry later

i agree with all above - 700r4 - i am running that also - all internals are corvette - ( got a killer deal on that )

Just make sure that your overdrive tranny will match your rear gearing.

After swapping several 700's, I like them BUT you never feel as confident about flogging them like a TH350 or TH400. I hear this from alot of guys, even though our 700's are built.

My '71 has some power and lately I've been wishing that I had stuck with a TH350 and re-geared to 3.08.

get the OD trans and a rear gear gear in the mid 3.xx range. Best thing you can do.

Have to agree with most everyone. Hard to beat a 700 R4 because of the overdrive. Especially if you are going to cruise any distance. Before you go either way also look at you motor(mild or wild), rear end ratio, tire size,towing,budget, and as mentioned above what your main intent is.How many miles a year will you drive. Do the math in fuel savings. Don't rule out the 400. If someone gives you a rebuilt 350 you can buy a lot of fuel over rebuilding a 700 R4. If you find a deal on a rebuilt 700R4 well worth the little fiddling with the overdrive stuff. All three trans will work fine. Just pick the one that best fits your app ,budget, and goal. Good luck.

Ok working on getting a 700 right now. The freshly rebuilt 350 will hang out until someone needs it.

On a side note, Ive only seen transmission brace kits from places like CPP and Chevys of the 40's for TH350 transmissions. Nothing for a 700r4.

I know the 700 is 3 inches longer.

Can I use the same brace and scoot it back 3 inches.
Do I need to modify a 350 brace?
Is there a 700r specific brace?
Any links to a 700r4 47-53 build threads??

same tranny mount as the th350, just sits about 1 inch further back. same gear selector linkage too

After some research, Im getting a 700r4 put together right now from Dana Sniff out of Irvine, CA. This guy knows his stuff, hes been in the business for a long time.

Bowtie overdrives has the perfect TV cable carb adapter kit too.

I think im good to go in the transmission dept!
