55 chevy 3100 rear cab corners
Hi, guys
any one have any Ideas on the best way to tackle cab corners I just started to cut my cab corners and found the inner is rusted. from some articles I have read I recall that some guys eliminate the inner cab corners. Whats the best way to eliminate the inner cab corners.Here are some pictures. what are your thoughts. -Larry |

everything rusts, that's not bad, not even considered rusty in this neck of the woods.
unless your doing a 100 point restore, clean up the metal, prime it and after you get your cab corner welded in; tap the bottom edge into the cab corner, clamp it, tack it down, add a little more primmer and your done. don't weld it solid or you will have a water trap.

I think what I have decided, is replace the inner cab corners then weld a top plate inside the cab with seam sealer, so no water can get threw to the inside of the cab. Thanks for the suggestion. -Larry |

When I did mine reproductions were not made. On the driver side I cut it back to good metal, fabbed a piece using pipe and pie cuts, then spot welded it in. On the passenger just had to cut in a patch. I left plenty of room for any moisture to drain, the bottoms getting plugged with dirt, etc and retaining moisture is the reason the corners rust out. Some guys with street driven trucks in sunny climates just cut them back. I wanted the extra support to keep the outside corner from vibrating and possibly cracking. I seam sealed the top joint and undercoated the whole works. You should also make a closure piece for the cab floor. Look here for what I did posts 48-55 cover it.

Thanks for the reply. Thats some nice pictures.That's what I am going to do on my corners, patch the top inside of the cab. I think that's the best approach to a stable cab-corner. Where the rear door meets the cab step,it has some rust there as well.Its Where the cab corner meets the lower door seal on the cab. I need to patch that as well. I might as well do the whole thing, its going to be a driver, not a show truck. I don't want it rusting again. -Larry |
