SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

I successfully replaced a intake valve seal with the head still on the engine! I did it the traditional way with a valve spring compressor and a piece if rope! I didn't realize how easy it was but I still only replaced the one, the best part is the BBC doesn't smoke anymore!

Ya, I have to get around to doing mine also. Did you use the umbrella type seals? Aprox. how long does it take? I have an 87 454 TBI, It's my daily driver, so I'd have to make it a week end job.

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

From start to finish it took around 30 minutes to replace one umbrella style valve seal! The trickiest part is getting the spring compression tool lined up just right so the spring doesn't come shooting out like a bullet, just be careful and you'll be alright!

You pull the spark plug and fill the cyl full of rope to hold the valve up.

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

The rope keeps the valve pushed up, bring the piston to TDC and stuff the cylinder full, the valve must be all the way up or you won't get the keepers off or back on! You can also use an old spark plug wire or compressed air!

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

Is the process the same on a SBC? My truck smokes a little when you first start it up or if it has been idling for an extended period of time. The truck sat for 10 years without being started once. It has 83,000 miles on the truck and original 305.

And congrats on your success story!

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

It's the same! My 454 didn't smoke at start up but did if idling for a while so I'd think you're issue is the valve seals and not the piston rings!

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

I don't plan on doing the other valve seals until they go bad simply because I believe in the old saying, "Don't Fix It If It's Not Broke"!

You said you only replaced one seal and now your engine doesn't smoke anymore. How did you know which one to replace? I would think if one is bad (dried out), they all would be.

Re: SUCCESS!!! BBC Valve Seal Replacement!

Only one cylinder was oil fouling the plug, #4.

This is what it looked like before replacing the valve seal!
