Camshaft ? 5.3
The 5.3 is in the stand, & I am thinking about the parts to "collect" for the build. This trip, I am looking more for tork/fuel economy(its not fun to drive if it dont pass a gas pump) This 5.3 will be backed with a 6 spd Richmond OD, & 3.42 gears(29" tires). What do you guys reccomend, in a stock 5.3, that will idle with a slight hint of lope, & pull to about 55-5700 when needed? crazyL

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
maybe something in the 21x/22x @ .050 with .550 lift or so on 112-114 LSA?
my big headed 6.0 has a 223/231-.610/.617-112 in it and makes gobs of torque

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
Would you go Z06, or the ls hot cam? I want this little "mill", to pull its stones way down south, & hard through the mid range? crazyL

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
I"ll be stuffing a COMP bumpstick in my 5.3. P/N 54-408-11
Specs: 206/212 .515/.522 112LSA With a truck intake, this cam will give stupid torque, decent midrange, pull to 5800, idle just a little choppy, and give good mileage. I'm getting mine for all of those reasons. (assumptions of power delivery made with CamQuest software) |

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
just upgrade your springs....ptv should be OK.
p-rods should be 7.400" stock length..upgrade to chromemoly/hardened if you can

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
Z06 cam will need longer pushrods; I believe it is a reduced base circle cam. Yes stock pushrod length is 7.4", pushrod change required for any cam other than stock. TR220 is pretty sweet, lopes great as well. The Texas crowd loves the TR220 and TR224.

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
I find it hard to believe the ZO6 cam with 204/218@ .050 duration and .550 lift has a reduced base circle. And GMPP catalog doesn't mention need for p-rods... but does say springs need upgrade.
heck....my Comp LSr series with 223/231 @.050 .610/.617 lift and it runs chromemoly 7.40's and .650 springs.

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
Ah, well then 68GMC, I will note that! Thanks for the correction, I don't want to give false info!! I have just always seen that when changing cams, always go for springs and pushrods.

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
Pushrod length will change with a smaller base circle cam, milled heads, or some styles of lifters. Mild cam should not require pushrod length to change in most cases. Hardened is a good idea when upping the lift...

Re: Camshaft ? 5.3
Yes. I didn't mean to imply you needed LONGER pushrods with all cam swaps, just hardened ones. Sorry for the confusion.
