Lets talk parking brake..or lack there of

Just tore into my 64 yesterday to rebuild wc's, hardware kits and shoes.

As Im sitting there staring at everything, something occured to me.

Somewhere over its life, a PO basicly cut all parking brake cables off, and there isnt anything left.

As I did the passenger rear, I realized the strut bar(painted red) between the shoes was MIA on this side. But it was present on drivers side.

They also removed the bracket that attached to parking cable inside drum. (Painted white in this pic below)

I found nice pics to show ya what parts I refer to.

Now,
I have no desire to replace the entire parking brake system. It has a automatic. And Ive had countless cars/trucks with non-working parking/e-brake systems.

Everything seems to function correctly while missing the ebrake cable bracket and strut bar.

So question is...
Any reason Im missing why I will have issues with rear brakes? Everything else is exactly as shown.

Well that will work. bit for that cost, I might as well upgrader to disc.

I have to bump this old thread i found using the search function..
I am in the same boat, I'm replacing my brake components but I'm missing some parking brake stuff (cables/xmember/brake lever) , not worried about replacing them (i know i know), but should i reinstall the parking brake "lever" in the drum (the white piece above), as well as the strut bar? Or should i leave them out, if there is no cable? one side had them both, one side had only the strut bar.

If you have a MC with a single reservoir and blown a line... You'd appreciate that E-brake!

This absolutely happens....and here's how: The anchor pin for the brake shoe return springs that is threaded into the spindle becomes fatigued over 50 some odd years of the springs pulling on it. One day you hit the brakes and "snap" it shears off. Then the wheel cylinder goes "pop" and all braking is lost in an instant. Been there, done that twice. The first time I thought it was a fluke, the second time I converted the truck to disc. I now also own a 4 wheel drum truck but I converted it to a dual resivoir and my e-brakes on all my vehicles will lock the wheels up when I yank 'em. Unless you are doing a restoration, switch out that m/c for a dual system and fix that EMERGENCY brake. Thankfully nothing too bad happened to me when I got my "wake up call."

As AcampoDave said. It does happen. I blew a front line to the drivers wheel. I only had the single MC. If it wasn't for the E-brake I'd have been T boned for sure. With the E-brake I was able to slow the truck enough that the car coming down the road had room to swerve around the front of the truck! Way to close! Even if it's an automatic and I don't use it very much it is nice to have.
