Is it slipping? Please, help with advice...

I'm wondering what's wrong with my truck. Sometimes when I put it in reverse it moves forward a smidge for a second. Could this be because I need rear main seals, or is my trans about to kick the bucket. Could it also be not enough fliud.

its prolly not enough fluid, but never overfill... are you on an incline? every automatic trans i have wil roll back a little when im on a hill with the nose higher than the rear if i let go of the brake and idle some ,and its perfectly normal

Not on a hill, walmart parking lot. It could very well be to much fluid, because when I had the trans dipstick seal replaced the guy took a lot of fluid out and said it was too much in there. Its like always leaking due to needing seals.
So, my question is how to tell if there's too much fluid, because looking at the dip stick it doesn't go pass the line. How is that possible? Should I drain the fluid and add new to be sure it has the rignt amount? Thanks.

Are you checking the fluid level properly? It's not like an engine, where you pull the dipstick with the engine off. Adding trans fluild with the engine off will result in an overfull situation.

Here's how I do it, just in case:

a) Engine idling in Park
b) Pull the trans dipstick and without looking at it wipe it off.
c) Reinsert dipstick
d) Get in the vehicle; cycle slowly through Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Neutral, Drive, Reverse and back to Park; foot on the brake, vehicle stopped. Give it a chance to hit each gear as you make the selection.
e) Hop back out, pull the dipstick and take a look at the fluid level shown
f) Add as necessary (taking fluid out is a problem).

I've always wiped the dipstick, then put it back to let it warm up, then rechecked. Never thought to cycle thru all the gears. I'll try that when I get it all back together (everything is off now for engine cleanup, paint and badly needed new parts.) Thanks.

The guy that changed the dipstick seal, drained about a quart of trans fluid. He said it was way too much fluid. Was he right because when I shift to reverse it moves forward a bit.

Correct - it won't do anything (ie, no forward motion) except burn it up.

It does go into gear, it just doesn't turn the output shaft because there's no fluid to provide friction. I'm gonna chime in here and say worn out differential gears. My K10 does this anytime you change gears (Fwd to Rev, Park to Fwd, Park to Rev) and it's because there's a lot of play in the diff gears.

No, not at all. There are bands inside the transmission...like big belts you would win in wrestling, that are used to pull against drums to engage the forward and reverse gears. The tranny fluid is integral to keeping these bands from wearing down like worn out sand paper, as well as lubricating the rest of the transmission.

I learned everything I know about trannys rebuilding the transmission out of the Ford Ranger I used to have. Being broke and unable to pay a shop to do, I printed out a 200+ page "How-to" thread somebody had made detailing to the extreme how to rebuild it. The guy that bought it off me went and had it rebuilt again after I told him I did the rebuild. What the hell is the point in replacing all the brand new parts I just put in there when they're working fine?

Yep that's how I am, will either successfully rebuild it or destroy it and have to buy a new tranny...
