700R4 no wires inside

OK guys I have another question. Our truck has a 700R4 and I hear people mention about the sensors and wiring inside the trans. Yesterday I dropped the pan to change the filter and I find that there are no wired inside the trans. I see the two sensors/Solenoids but not wires. The truck shifts fine and goes into overdrive and overall runs pretty good. It turns 1600 RPM at 75 mph. ( Pretty low but I plan to take care of that with a new rear-end and gears.) The truck was bought used so I have no idea what has all been done. I do see that the factory wiring for the Trans is not being used. It is still there and resting on top of a heat shield. New individual wires are run and connected to the Trans via a new connector.

Should I be worried?

I search the archives and found mention of rebuilt units that didn't require the wires but people mentioned it is still good to have them.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, the 700R4 should only have hookups for the neutral safety switch and reverse signals. To the best of my knowledge it's not dependent on an ECU for shift points or anything else, however the 4L60E is dependent on the ECU.

I wouldn't worry about anything as long as it does what it should. As far as the unused wires, the truck might have originally been with a TH350 and the connectors were different? Hard to say sight unseen.

The only electrical on a 700 is for the lockup converter. Is it locking up? You can make them lockup with out 12 volts by putting a 5/16 check ball in the lock up solenoid that bolts into the front pump.
Nuetral and reverse switch is on the steering column.

To me it feels like it is locking up. At higway speeds you can give it gas and she will increase speed pretty good. If you get into good enough she will down shift and move pretty good. My only quesion on it is that when I drive with it in Drive and not Over Drive it does down shift harder when slowing down to a stop.

I just added a Derale transmission pan and a temp gauge this morning so I will be able to keep track of the temp.

The problem is it will feel fine until it just burns up,many a 700 has been killed by not setting up the throttle valve correctly and not using a lockup device in fourth gear.most kits are around 100.00. Or you can make your own.http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/lockup.htm

Make sure the throttle valve is set up correctly,also driving a 700 on the freeway for extended periods with out the lock up working will overheat and burn up the tranny.been there got the t shirt.

Very common to get harder downshifts when running in D rather than OD. When you are in manual 1, 2 or 3(D), the overrun clutch is applied. It is not applied at all when running in OD. In other words, don't worry about that. I would certainly get the TCC working though. As mentioned previously, 700's have a habit of barbequing themselves when the TCC is not engaged in 4th. Does not need to be engaged in any other gear though....

Or the lock up is just not working.

The 700R4 is not electronic. The internal wiring is for the tcc solenoid and pressure switches. If it was simply removed you would not have the lock up functional.

Temp runs about 180. I ran one on the TH400 in my 1969 E Camino and loved it. I got this one from Jegs
