interesting...I went through this same exercise with my 502 and found that 11-12 works great for my brakes...which I get at idle out of gear...unfortunately it drops to 7-9 at idle in gear...so I "may" be looking at a canister or pump soon.

The cans are pretty easy to install. Mount it and run a vacuum line from the back of the intake/carb to the can. Then from the can to the brake booster. A couple of things you might check first. May sure the check valve (the plastic piece where the line connects at the booster) is good. Put a vacuum on the booster and check it also. I ran one many years ago on a 351C with a big solid lift cam and it worked great.

sounds like you might have a leak in your booster, they like to leak at the back, do you get a whishing noise when you hit your brakes?

Some things to remember, there were at least 4 booster designs, with some of them being daul diaphram units. Not all of them are as pickey as the others.
I have used the vac cans in the past. It was simple, find a place to mount it, run the hose to it, I used a check valve on the can (just liek the one on the booster its self) and then plump it to the booster. Mine worked fine, but in stop and go I'd get surprised with a hard pedal after about 6 brake aplications. Then all you need to do is pop it in neutral and rev the motor once. |
