front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
So now that I have converted my front brakes to discs I've noticed that the wheels and tires stick out from the frame of the body causing them to rub on the frame when i go over bumps. Is there anything else I can do without having to change to a thinner wheel in the front? Or if that is all I can do, do you know if they make this same design wheel in a thinner format so I could keep the rear wheels.? Any input, opinions and ideas are all welcome. thanks heres a pic of the wheel design |

Did you use a kit for the conversion?
If so, what kit did you use? There are some that move the wheels out, and some that supposedly don't. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
I've never seen a kit OR a crossmember swap or anything move them out THAT much though - wow. Having said that, those are pretty wide front tires - do you have a "before" pic that preceded the conversion? I'm curious like LostMy65 as to how you did this mod.

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
Im gonna look thru my pics when i get home to see how far they had already stuck out before the conversion. I do remember noticing how wide the front tires were when I first bought it.
As far as what kit was used Im not 100% sure because I let my friend who owns a shop do that job and I was gonna order a kit from performanceonline.com but he said he could get it a little cheaper thru his guys so I let him. I hope I dont end up regretting that.. edit: ok i just found a pic b4 the conversion and they may have already stuck out a bit from what i can see from this angle. I think between the conversion and the lowering spindle it just really magnified it. as you can see from this pic these are ridiculously deep dish wheels so does anyone know what this style wheel would be called so I can shop around for a smaller size..... Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
I agree, the 10" wheels are just too wide for on the front of a lowered truck. 8" wheels may work, but might be close as well.
Genuine Centerline wheels have their name engraved right on the face of the wheels. Those look like a different brand to me. Maybe American Racing Wheels

My front wheel are out wider also with drop spindle. disc brake conversion and I used 8 inch chev truck ralley wheel and it worked out good, I think they are a 4 inch back space rim.

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
nice looker. i can see that with your truck... 6 inchers ought to put the wheels inwards such that the front can even get a little lower ....
got any links to details of your truck ? thanks for posting. paul |

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
The widest rim you can use with the disc brakes is eight inch with a standard back space, you have a ten inch rim under there now...

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
Yes, the kit probably moved your wheels out 3/4" per side. As do most kits.
Cpp claims that theirs will not move the wheels out. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
If CPP are using the modular spindles from the newer trucks, that is correct, I believe Capt Fab has all the part numbers to convert to the modular spindles...stock height, stock parts.

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
I don't think those wheels would have worked even with a CPP kit. As Rich said 10" wheels are too wide for the front on a lowered 60-66.

what is the back space ? and is your wheel 8" or 10" ? i assume you have no rubbing problems with caliper or tie rods ? i am doing drop/disc too. let us know what you find out. thanks probably a 6 " wheel would work !!! |

Re: front tires now sticking out too far and rubbing after disc brake conv
hey thanks alot guys for all the input! I'm gonna have to agree that these 10" wheels are just not gonna work. I checked the face of the rim and its completely blank so not sure what they are but those Centerline wheels you pointed out Markeb01 look almost identical. So are these rims considered 'rally' ??
Hopefully I can find someone that might wanna swap out just two of their smaller rims but i know that's a shot in the dark. too bad I just bought brand new tires heres another close up shot Last edited by chadh100; 06-08-2012 at 09:17 PM. |
