Min garage size for one project truck…what would it be enough?

Here's a project design exercise for you guys to tinker with...

Theres a lot of folks adding structures lately so it's gotten me to thinking;
just what does it take to accommodate even one truck, being worked on, and
the tools and storage to do so?

I think if one had to, you could restore a truck in a single car garage and use the attic for storage. I know for fact that some on this site have less than that and I see what they have accomplished and it's Just amazing!! I guess if you do have it you really don't miss it. A friend of mine did a Camero in a carport! You couldn't tell by looking at it now. Cheers, Pat

This isn't design so much as opinion. If you come up with a size, go bigger and then you still may fill it.
I've seen project done in a carport, or when I made my old truck roadworthy, a pine tree.
I've also seen a 40x40 filled with a project.

My shop is 18x28. If you are talking about building a truck in one, it works. If you end up putting up tons of other crap in there too, it wont LOL.

I had my old 56 Caddy in there for awhile and it worked for that too.

I think if mine was a hundred by a hundred it would be packed full in a week.


Mine is 32 X 32 and if I'da been richer at the time it woulda been bigger than that. With my chassis in one bay and my Panel body on a rack in the other, there's not much room left for all the rest of my stuff

a friend of mine has a 24x24 and it is tight on the length but you could get by, barely on a long bed truck. I looked at a house for sale with a 30x30 and it was amazing how much room the extra 6 feet in length and width combined added... consider it this way like 6x6 more in an L

I haven't measured mine, but it's like a 1.5-car garage. Bigger than a 1-car, but impossible to fit 2 cars into, even if they were Miatas. I have my '69 Burb in it, and only have about 18" to close the door. I had a decent amount of room on the sides, but my workbench, toolbox, and shelves are on one side, taking about 2.5' and I also store 4 motorcycles, my lawn mower, engine hoist and stand, and some other crap. I'm jam-packed in there, but I manage to get work done, because I wheel out the lawnmower and most of the bikes when I'm out there all day. Sure, my place looks like the Teller-Morrow parking lot from Sons of Anarchy when I do that, but it keeps the neighbors away!!
I'd be happy with a decent sized shed to store my lawn mower and race bikes. That would free up the garage a bit. Either way, I'm gettin work done!!

My truck is'nt anything special, but it was built in a 12x19 garage.

i've done work in the carport for the past year...now i have a 24' x 36' shop that is setup for paint...and i'm stoked...plenty room for a project. might expand later who knows

Which portable garage? I'm thinking I will have to get one if I want to do anything this winter. Yeh it doesn't get cold here but most winters it will rain on the weekends and ruin all car plans.

All depends on what you are doing. 1st pic what I could do in a 22x20, 2nd pic what I have now and who I share it with. If I were to build anything, the minimum dimension of the shortest side would be 28'. Just too hard to get around otherwise IMHO

My 1972 GMC was built in a very small garage that was built in the late 40's. Tiny, cold, drafty, wet, hot in summer, and dirty. When it would rain hard... I would sometimes get 1" to 2" of water in the garage in one corner. But I had recently got divorced and it was all I could afford. That was almost 8 years ago...

Fast forward to today, and I now have a 38' x 40' shop, and I have so much room... I don't know what to do. Maybe buy another project? My girlfriend and I have been looking for a 1972 Nova for her. So...

...all I can say is that it's all how you use the space. My tiny garage I had was crammed full of tools, compressor, welder, and 3 dirtbikes. Space was very limited... but I made it work.

I don't know that it makes much difference to me.If I had a really big shop maybe,but I've had up to 24X28 and still work in the drive.Now admittedly most only had 8 ft or so height and some had support posts that interfered with really using it.If I build a large shop I would go taller and probably build a carport to work in.I tend to wait for weather though,so if it were A/C and heated,I would probably do more inside.

DesertCat...if I tried to use the barn for projects...my wife would kick my ass or turn my shop into stalls for our horses LOL

I built the truck in the pics below out of a 17x21, including painting it. I've got an english wheel, 4' brake, paint mixing table, 4.5'x2' paint mixing/work table, my toolbox is on a 4'x2' cart, a dorm fridge, Miller 135 welder/cart, oxy/acetalene torch on a cart, and 2'x3' roll around cart all taking up space. I do have one whole wall that is peg board to hang parts on which really helps, but I still have to store some larger parts off site. Alot can be done in a small space, but it gets cramped in a hurry!











I'm working on a '55 International now, you can see some of my shop stall in the background. You can see the pegboard wall in the last pic for parts/tool storage and the doors hung on the wall to save space.
