My "New" 1991 2500 Burb

Well...after looking high and low for that "perfect" deal......finally found what I have been looking for. Picked up a 91 K2500 for.......$300!! Yes...I know it has half ton axles....P.O. swapped them to his 91 Blazer and I got the 91 Blazer axles....no worries for now. It DOES still have the 4L80E transmission that the 3/4 tons came within 91 though.....sweet! Anywayz...it needs some love.....paint of course...few dings here and there.....but it's not like it'll be a show truck.....just a capable offroad vehicle. Oh yeah...the running boards are coming off in the morning...first thing! Anyone want them for free??? I'm in Oak Harbor, WA. Lemme know.....I do need a center console for it and 91 dash bezel....lol.....Last photo.....Tucker approves!!!Pat

Patch, that is a nice looking rig! A fantastic price!!! I might be interested in the running boards..... I bought a 90 V2500 Burb recently also. It was $800 and is in really good shape. It's at my Mom-in-Laws house for a while..... It's got "may pop" tires on it and needs cleaning/maint, but it's all there. If you could post better pics of the running boards, I might just take them off your hands. Will need to be boxed up and shipped.....Will give you $$. My last Burb had those, and I really liked them

Awesome score on the burb looks pretty clean and great price. I have always liked the way the early 90's blazers n suburbans have looked! Have fun with the new project.

Aren't these classified as V2500s? lol nice to see another 91 2500 i feel like i've seen maybe 1 or 2 others and i seemed to have gotten the bone stock non power one out of them all..

Yeah....probably not K series.....but the V just sounds sooooo lame....lol. Got the instant lift kit installed.....or removed the running boards.... .got the dent out of the drivers door.....and fixed some other minor issues....so far so good. About the only thing I see that this doesnt have is powder mirrors. Is the rear window defrost on the barn doors pretty standard? I have a 3/4 ton set-up located...and I'll use these 1/2 tons on my 72 Shorty.....(Original drivetrain long gone). My next issue is to sand.....neutralize the surface rust on the top...prime...and top coat until I can get some real body work completed. If anyone can see the mounts on the roof...were those an option...or do you think someone added a rack? Thanks....Pat

SCORE!! Good deal # 2!!! Thank's to Jeff from Lake McMurray!!! 1 ton 14 bolt for $80.00! Havent figured out he gear ratio yet......but since it's from a 1 ton 4x4 that had a 4 speed in front of it...hoping for 410's.....we shall see. Definately not a locker......

Well...so much for hoping.....popped the cover.....looks like 373's for me...and not so sure it was off a 1 ton.....brakes seem smallish...and the perches on one tons were narrower werent they?

Be glad it is not a 1 ton or you would be cutting off spring perches and welding on new ones. The spring perch locations are different between 1 ton and ¾ ton 14 bolt full floaters. The axle you have is a 1973-1984 variant with 11” brakes which are decent but you will not be able to get your 88’ park brake cables to connect to those backing plates. I am fighting that now with my ’89 V2500 Sub swapping in a ’78 14 bolt FF to replace a 9.5” 14 bolt semi floater turd. In my case, I have to score some 13” rear brake drums then reuse the 13” backing plates at are currently on the 9.5” axle (the brake backing plates are the same between the 14 bolt semi floater and full floater). That was a surprise to me to learn that a few weeks ago. Kinda pissed me off actually!

For $80 you still cannot go wrong for what you got!

Yeah...350 smoke puker currently....bad valve or rings...one of the two....as far as brakes....I'm going to swap in some disc's.....lose about 50 lbs of rotating weight...eventually get the gears changed out to 4.10's. I have a D44 front that is 4.10-11's and it has the big spicer lock-outs....I'll use that until I ever need a reason to upgrade.....I dont ever plan on going bigger than 35's....(That's what I say now...lol)

Off hand I don’t know but it is narrower than a 1 ton spring perch would be. Personally I wouldn’t recommend the trendy rear disks with little Cadillac Eldorado calipers that all the sheople are tripping over themselves installing. Those calipers were horrible in Eldorado and Tornados and to trust them on a big truck is just scary to me

I researched rear disks for my K10 and chose to upgrade from 11” rear drums to 13” rear drums. Yes, they are heavy but it stops like an anchor was dropped out the back plus I have a reliable park brake…can’t say that when converting to Eldorado/Tornado calipers if that is the route you were thinking.

Wasnt thinking about the el dorado calipers.....but I have used the stock front end calipers on a kit years ago....worked just fine...albeit no parking brake......and I doooo love my parking brake.....did a swap on a 72 Chevy Dana 60 rear....no problem. I was a drum brake proponant for a while......but disc's are so much easier.......hhhmmm.....

Okay.....soooooo, i picked up another Burb...this one is a 90 1500 4x4....and overall in much better shape than the 91...the 90 has a blown transmission, and my new question of the day is this.....I should be able to pull the controller and 4L80E transmision/t-case out of the 91 and put it in the 90 inplace of the 700R4.....Yes? The both have 241 cases I believe....I'll use the 3/4 ton drivelines and whatnot for my Corp 14 and D44 3/4 front.

HE did infact remove the rack...lol..oh well. Maybe I'll try and talk him out of it...hhhmmmm....
I think I am going to start pulling parts this weekend...maybe even tomorrow. The grill on the 90 is broken in two.....but for some crazy reason...I REALLY love the GMC grilles....I dunno yet. The interior is blue on the 90...but I like it....rear wheel wells have some rust on the seams...but P.O. has two replacements that were cut out of another donor vehicle. Steering column on the 90 is LOOSE...bigtime...something internally has backed off or stripped...so i will be pulling that out of the 91....so much to do...but it'll be fun. Somebody gave me some info on the transmission swap...so that looks like it wont be a problem...i will update with pics and info as I go....I picked up the 1990 for $500.00...so for the two rigs so far...$800 investment...not too bad.....Thanks.....Pat

Progress!!! Got the 1/2 ton rear axle out of the way and half of the rivets holding the rear hangers on. Ordered the DIY4X kit with 6 shackles....we'll see how that goes!! Still need to kneel the gas tank to be able to get inside the frame rails for the conversion. I'm using an air chisel to cut the tops off of the rivets and an air punch to drive them out.....sure BEATS the drill and pound method by far. I'll continue with more pictures when I get the kit here...Pat
P.S. YES, I put more safety supports under the middle frame section...

Very cool project. The paint on these Suburbans were always problematic. My 1990 Suburban also had very oxidized paint which I ended up having to sand completely off so the new paint would have good adhesion. Here's the thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=520550

Sooooo...a lil progress has been made.....Got the tranny and xfer case out of the 90...tranny is blown (good ol 700r4) Got all of the hanger plates cut off and the DIY4X flip kit installed. Got the springs from the 91 3/4 ton installed and awaiting the greasable bolts and my U-bolts for my 14 bolt rear....definately getting there....still have to pull the 4L80E from the 91 and it's harness/controller. Picked up some 35 inch shoes for it as well. I opted for the 6 inch shackles to go along with the 6 inch front springs...we'll see if I'm going to need a zero rate or note to make it level. I unburried my Dana 44 with the large spicer hubs from the yard...got to gether cleaned up as well....Interestingly enough....I havent bled one time between the two vehicles yet....hmmmmm....I'm thinking I might need to be worried...
