OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
I'm about to spend some cash on a 70 grille that has no dents or cracks. It also says Chevrolet on it. How can I tell if it's OEM/NOS or aftermarket?
And what does a nice used 70 OEM grille go for ? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
I feel that the correct OEM grille will have the indents for the paint bars above and below the Chevrolet continue to the headlights. Many NOS/aftermarket, cut them short just after the turn signal lights. Trevor

This "can of worms" has been talked about MANY times before on this website. The first picture below, shows what "some" believe to be an original grill . . . the two black bars continue from the turn signal to the headlight. The second picture shows a reproduction grill . . . the bars don't go to the headlight and there is a vertical black bar between the turn signal and the headlight. This one was said to be from Brothers - neither are mine. My reproduction grill was around $600, THREE years ago . . . $400 doesn't seem to bad to me !!! . . . . |

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
There are lots of other threads related to this as said earlier. One claim is that the OEM grills that were pressed for repairs and replacement, may have also looked like the bottom picture where the black indentations don't extend past the outside of the turn signals. I personally can't confirm or deny such claims but may be something you'd want to look into.

Subscribed. I bought an NOS grillle about 7 yrs ago for $200 and it looks like the bottom picture above. I don't recall ever seeing one like the top pic.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
Both the 100% original 70 that my dad had and the 69 I have are ones with the lines all the way to the headlight. I have heard tho that gm produced them the other way afterward.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
Sounds like the NOS stuff (non-original) were different on a lot of items. I was looking at some threads on tailgate bands and there are some that have chrome metal letters and others that are painted plastic letters.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
Are you talking about on the top between the rivets and the center of the grille on both sides? The one that was on my truck when I bought it (I believe it was and NOS grille) and the NOS one I bought 7 years ago both have what appear to be punch marks made from the bottom side.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
Here's one I rescued out of a bone stock 70' in a junkyard. The truck was smashed in the driver side but the grille was still in really good shape, I'm using it on my project.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
Mine looks like the bottom photo with the vertical bars outboard of the t/s lamps. I did purchase mine from a GM dealer years ago, and pulled it out of an unopened GM box. I wish I still had the part #. I can look around at some old catalogs from a dealership that I once worked for, and see if they still have the paper catalogs. They were still available 2 years ago, but very high, even at dealer cost! Paul

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
This is a new GM grille purchased new in the box this spring at Carlisle from the Truck Shop. It was $500. They had 3 on the truck and I opened all 3 boxes as none was absolutely perfect.

Re: OEM vs AFTERMARKET 70 grille
My 69 has a repop grill and my 70 has the factory grill and the lights are both 2 1/4" from the headlights ring.
Like was posted earlyer my 69s grill does not have the lines run past the marker lights while the 70s do. Posted via Mobile Device |
