Nitrous people come and answer a strange question!

So I was in the machine shop where I get most of my engine work done and they were talking about something that I have never heard done before. Now I have never used power adders before (aside from more cubic inches) but they were talking about some strange things. So I have 535 BBC in a street driven truck but when I finish rebuilding the truck again I may go whack on it occcasionally at the track for giggles. Makes a bit over 600 HP and the shop was suggesting that if I wanted more from it ( and I am not planning on doing this just asking about the possibility) that I put a plate system on it (I believe). I have aluminum heads and 11:1 compression with 32 degrees total timing (sounds low I know but on the dyno this yielded best numbers).I am running 93 octane on the street being pushed by a electric pump out of a 16 gallon cell in the bed.Ok sounds reasonable enough right? Now it gets weird. They suggested mounting another cell by my 93 octane tank and filling it with 117 (or 115, 112 cannot remember the number) octane and running another fuel system up to the carb and whenever I wanted to use the happy gas a simple solenoid would switch me to my richer fuel and then with a box I could retard the timing (IIRC, please excuse my ignorance) and then would be throwing a lot more horses to the ground. Then when that stop light race was over could just switch back to regular gas and timing and continue my drive to the grocery store. Is this possible or is this merely good in theory??!!! Remember I am not planning on doing this, only asking about the viability of it. I know that there is still fuel in the carb bowls (950 DP) and surely this would have to be burned out before the nitrous started flowing. Ok flame away!!!

What they are talking about is a wet N20 kit with a dedicated fuel system for the N20.

Your main tank still feeds the carb the 93 octane you run everyday.

The N20 kit has 2 solenoids, one for fuel, one for N20. The dedicated fuel system would supply the fuel solenoid which in turn mixes with the N20 as it is injected in to the plenem of the intake.

Ya, usually its not a "full second fuel cell", but a few extra gallons. Some guys have even converted things like washer fluid tanks, although thats a bit small.

You can still get a dry nitrous setup for cheap, but since you don't have any adjustablility in the fuel system on the fly (like efi would), a dry system really isn't a good choice.

IIRC people do a version of the same thing using e-85, but it requires a much larger fuel side.

Super 73 is right on .

Add a 1 gallon cell with electric fuel pump , regulator and return line with orfice ( i prefer return lines for steady pressures ) a plate ( edelbrock RPM flowed by Induction solutions comes to mind ) a retard box , purge noid , remote bottle opener and associated wiring and you are good to go . I run 112 in the nitrous cell and 93 in the rear motor cell and spray up to 250 so far . Looks something like this :

Wow cool pictures! I doubt if the stock turbo 400 would much like being hit with some "cheap cubic inches" since it is already having to put up with the 535 in front of it. About what does a system like this cost?

Fuel cell , Holey blue pump , holley regulator , AN fittings and hoses . the cost of the edelbrock system plus $400 to havew it flowed . Guessing $1500 with 3 used bottles .

Yes, I run a dedicated fuel system for my nitrous plate system. The regulator on the left feeds my carburetor, and the regulator on the right feeds my nitrous fuel solenoid. A lot of racers run a dedicated fuel system up front with a small 1 to 3 gallon fuel cell, electric pump and regulator(s).

We ran a very similar setup in my friends 67 camaro. I don't think you need a flowed system to get good performance. My friend ran an off the shelf NX Kit. I would only get in to a flowed system if you were gonna spray it really really hard Like 300 Plus! We also ran a progresser to be able to ramp the nitrous up as slow or fast as we desired. We were able to get low 1.40 60ft with a 275-60-15 drag radial. His car ran 7.0's in the 1/8th on motor and 6.40's on a progressed 200 Shot!

Make sure you get a flow kit and flow the nitrous everytime you go to the track to spray it.

Its a 427T block, AFR heads, JE pistons, H beam rods, and Callies (?) crank. Was thinking that if I were to actually go nuts and do this that I would want to hit it pretty hard to make it worth it.

If you want to hit it hard do a fogger and have it flowed. I plan to spray 300 to 500 out of the gate. I have a Monte Smith Tuned Fogger.

That's were we all started and this is were it leads to. After the first hit your like a dope feen you just can't get enough. You are on the correct path by adding a small second fuel system for the nos if you still plan to do the street seen. I use one cell and large pump for everything. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yep have one going in my truck as well its set up to be an easy swap have all the parts in line, just had to add the tank.. SUPER common to add the small cell in engine bay.. All I have to do is block off the feed and plumb in the new fuel source.. Not running the NOS yet as the stock 8.2 is still in place well maybe just the first stage its only 150

Many will tell you that you must have twin pumps for NOS.. But with proper math and take into account hose volume etc a single pump can be used and many do it with out issues.. KISS works for me. With an extra tank that is of course not an option with different types of fuels.

The reason most do the small tank is to not have ot mess with timing so much( a bunch of NOS and running pump gas .. With the MSD power gride it gets so simple that I may never add the tank.. Either way I can with ease if I decide to..

If you want trick most of the turbo guys with the pocket rocket cars run twin tanks , low/high boost. ECM does the pump swap for you when you dial it up, has a small time delay to ensure that the low bost fuel has been purged from system..


Link to the power grid .. VERY cool item and it will replace the daisey chain boxes etc.. Makes the set up so simple and will control soooo many things.
