Anyone powercoating rear drums?

Changing out my rear brakes and my paint that was on my drums is looking mediocre at best...

Thinking about having them blasted and powdercoated... Anyone had this done? Wondering how it would hold up to the road grime, brake dust... Etc...

Would love to see a pic of one done if you got one.

Thanks for reading.

My mom always had the best advice. It was just a tad late. After a fall that involved blood, she'd say....."Careful!"

Re: Anyone powercoating rear drums?

I powder coated the front drums on my 67 Camaro several years ago. They are sort of a cast iron gray. Has held up great. They look as good as they did the day I had them done.

Sorry, no pics. They hide behind ralley wheels.

Re: Anyone powercoating rear drums?

good question - I'm curiouis also. I guess off the top of my head, I wouldn't pc the drums becuase they are consumable items. But then, when I stop and think about it, they were much more consumable back in the day when the wheels got driven off all these trucks as a dd. So, if it's not going to be a dd, this is actually a pretty good idear... Hoping somone has some pics. I'd throw this out though - If I'm gonna shell out the $ for pc on a drum, I'd make darn sure it's a super high quality part that will last through at least a few turnings if you happen to accumulate sufficient miles on em.

Not what you asked, but:

$3.99 Orchard Supply Hardware Gloss Black. I'll tell you later on the, "How they holdin' up".

If they don't, I've still got 3/4 a can left over.

Re: Anyone powercoating rear drums?

I can't imagine pc holding up to the heat generated by a braking system, then I remembered that not everybody drives like I do or uses their truck to haul\tow. Probably fine for a show truck.

There is high temp powder coat. The stuff is very durable. I used to powder coat sprint car parts and we would powder coat just about everything on them. I would recommend doing it to new drums though. Unless you can get all of the grease and grime off of your old ones. If you don't it will ooze out when you bake the powder and ruin the finish. Spoken from experience.

Re: Anyone powercoating rear drums?

I would spray them with high temp engine paint or BBQ paint, much cheaper, quicker, less labor and can be touched up

Re: Anyone powercoating rear drums?

Ive powdercoated drum brakes on my bikes and they end up bubbling and peeling unless the part is new. Been painting everything ever since ( and you can always touch up fairly easy)
Epoxy primer rules if going by traditional paint instead of bomb spraying
