removing emissions stuff

i just bought a 1984 c10 swb with a 350 from a 81 suburban. im wondering what all is required to remove all the emissions stuff and what are some of the pros and cons. Im pretty much a noob when it comes to these older trucks. but im very excited about my new dd/ project.

Re: removing emissions stuff

Welcome to the boards. I just went through this on my 83 c10. Before you do anything, take several pictures, to be safe. Here is what I did:

Broke the water neck, so had to do something. What transmission do you have? Maybe just a normal TH350? If you have a lock up converter, that is a different cat. You need manifold for the distributor. I took all the stuff routed to the water neck off. Took all the stuff off the canister too. There might be another vac. connection on the front of the block, maybe like 5 vac. lines in a gang plug. Pull that off and tape over everything and see how it drives. If ok, then see if you can disconnect them too. Remember, try to go slowly, trace the lines. Plug lines if you feel vac. When in doubt, go one at a time.

Bottom line? You don't need any of them, really. Old school? If you have a normal HEI with 2 wires to the module and one hot wire to the cap, all you need is a manifold vac line for the advance, back of the intake goes to modulator on the trans, and to the brake booster. You will need another one to go to your heater blend door too, don't forget that one. Just go slow, one at a time. You will be fine.

i pretty much did the same thing on my 82 started removing one at a time then plugging up lines and if you think you still have a leak you can spray some carb cleaner and the idle will go down if your having a leak in certain spots

Well, ya there is that. A friend who thinks he know it all, switches to a small gas tank with E85 for just a few min to pass the smog test. He said that no longer than he had to run the moter, nothing hurt by leaning it out that much.

Got me, go figure. When I had to "pass a smog test", I went in running straight methanol. Being a racing fuel dealer, it was fun. I passed, eventhough I didn't need to, and everyone in the building was gassed and had to go out side to vent the place. Guess it was a little rich....

It was a blast. Picture someone spilling ammonia in an office. That was pretty much the scene. They said "wind up the motor a little to get a good reading". I blipped the throttle hard once, it tached up 8,000 and blew their little sniffer thingie out the pipe, broke some cable,(like I care).

On the way out of the parking lot, I saw one of my fuel customers, laughing his head off. He could smell it, smiled at me and said "410?" I said "yup..." He was onto my little trick. Nothing like putting a back up sprint car motor in a street rod.

Anyone want a pink slip to a Viper??
