1966 C10 700R4 Shifter options
I am putting a truck together for a friends son again, and I am running into the same problem I did last time. The last one we did was a 64 with a 350/350. We ended up using a B&M mega truck shifter. It set on a huge box that takes up entirely too much space. This build is a 66 with a 350/700R4. He wanted to use a B&M unimatic but that take 2.5 inched of clearence between the floor and the trans we only have 1.5. Both truck were originally 3 speed column shift which is the low hump floor. What has anybody else used in this situation?

Use a Lokar cable shifter that mounts on the floor.

I used the stock shifter mechanism from a 91 suburban, I also used the tilt steering column from the 91 burb, I do not have a gear indicator but it works just great......One could find a stock 65 steering column (automatic and tie it together with the 91 burb shifter mechanism on the column if you did not want it on the floor. what do you mean by a 91 burb shifter mechanism? Is that from inside the column or how the column connects to the trans? and does thet mean you will need a 91 burb 700r4

I purchased a rebuilt column from Kevs Classics from this site. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and I couldn't be happier.

Quote:
just find a salvage 2wd burb with a 700 r4, rob the linkage from the transmission, then see if it works with your stock column.....you might get lucky....... |

I use a stock Powerglide column and 73-87 C10 auto linkage, works great.

I'm with Indian113, go with the Lokar shifter. They make a quality product, clean and simple to install and have a trans and floor mount option depending on which one works better for you.

Re: 1966 C10 700R4 Shifter options
Thinks for the input! If it were mine I would have used a Lokar however Jr. brought me a B&M z-gate. I guess it is his truck but that is not what I would have put in if it were mine. Next question, what is everybody using for a tv cable bracket? I have looked at a couple universals that are either junk or just don't fit.
