235 vs 350

hi all,
after much deliberation i think i might keep the original 235. but i want to change my truck to 4x4. ive read that a turbo 350 or 400 will bolt up and work. if i did this and ran the axles of the 4x4 i have would the 235 be able to handle the power demand that the 4x4 will do. im not gonna do any heavy off roading just might need it for winter months with the snow and ice. i might do some pulling with the truck. will the 235 be able to hold up to this or should i just switch to the 350

The original tranny had very deep gearing, the trucks could pull a stump out.. very slowly. Definitely dont think the turbo 350 is going to give you that same torque ratio. Basically if you dont mind driving a truck thats going to under powered and slow keep the 235.

Obviously the 350/turbo350 combo will have enough torque and power to easily move the truck out of its own way.

235 will not bolt up to a th350 or 400, If your set on a six then you need a 230 , 250 or 292 to attach a th350 to it. You can by an adapter for a 235 and make it work but its very expensive for little gain.

It may be easier for you to re-chassis the truck with a 73-87 C10 4x4

I believe the Muncie SM420 was stock. This unit is a beast and highly sought after by the wheeling crowd.

I like my Muncie SM420 and my 235. Gearing is low, but I won't drive it on the interstate when it is finished.

i need to be able to also get the speed out of the truck also. it will be a daily driver and were i drive the i go about 65. also would it be worth it to have the engine rebuilt and maybe bored to a bigger size. if that would help with the speed i might consider that

You can have a highway and off road rig with the six but it will take careful mating of the transmission and tranfer case ratios and the six will still be singing at high speeds. My truck as a stock 2wd with 235 3 speed was good for 60 on the highway before floating the lifters but sucked off road (spent a lot to time in AZ and NM on back roads). I converted to a SM420 4 speed and 4.11 3/4 ton rear end. Top end decreased but it would climb a tree in low gear. I did not even consider keeping the 235when I converted, I wanted get to where I was off roading at 75, but be able to climb. Plus the cost was much more to rebuild than the 283 (got the whole 62 3/4 ton truck for $250) I had a 283/350th/203 transfer with 3.73 axles. This time I have upgraded to a 350 engine. If I had it to do over I would put in a 205 transfer or even look at a OD autotrans with newer transfer case. Also, my 350 with a part time tranfer case kit got better gas mileage than the 6 even pulling almost 700 pounds more weight.

i just switched my 56 to a 235 from a bored 283 to 302 , and let me tell ya i took it for the first test drive and i couldnt figure out what was wrong with the thing m,haha,,, do a 350/350combo ,, you will be much happier and for how much it cost to rebuild a 235 ,, your gonna save on the 350 ,but for the cool factor and looks and originality ,the 235 ,, im running 235 .borgwarner t-10 , 4.11 gears ,good all round if you dont mind taking a week to get to 60 , hahahaa

rebuilding a 235 will cost $2500- 3k easy. The oiling system is spotty at best the rocker arms have always been starved for oil and wear out quickly. No oil filter other than a bypass system that doesn't do much at all. Big heavy rods and an 85 lb. crank limit it for the high speed driving we do now. 235's were great when we do 50 mph. 292 would be a superior 6cyl in a 4x4

thanks for all the input guys. i think at the moment ill get the 235 running so i can drive it until the time where i can switch to my 350 with automatic transmission. On a side note i still have the frame from the 78 4x4 would it be easier to switch axles and all to the original frame or would it be easier to set the cab onto the 78 frame???
