is there a way to know what the gears are based on vin or spid if its not specified? heres the info i have

Re: VIN help

I'm pretty positive the only way is if it shows on the SPID in the glove box of the truck, or stamped or a tag that is actually on the axles themselves.

Re: VIN help

I can't imagine them being that low from the factory, especially being only a 3/4 ton. I would bet they are 3.73 or 4.11, unless the gears have been changed out. 5.13's are awfully low.

X2
20903 is a K20. It would have GT4 3.73 or GT5 4.10 gears with a Dana 44HD axle up front. The only CK trucks with 5.xx gears are the 2wd Cab-N-Chassis trucks with the Dana 70 dually and 19" wheels.

If it really has a Dana 60 up front then it could have anything for gears.

Look behind the front wheel. A Dana 44 has ball joints the 60 has king pins. If dirt is over the top of the axles they're likely hurt bad.

Re: VIN help

Per the powertrain chart in the GM Heritage Center archives the base axle (and only available axle) for a '78 K20 with the LF4 is a 3.73:1.

Your truck has 3.73's in it, assuming they have not been changed.

Re: VIN help

Thanks Keith that's the type of chart I was hoping to see. They may have been changed. Its my dads truck I know its a 350 th400 in it now dad says he remembers it just screaming at road speed And he says 5.13 or 5.38 however he is generally knowledgeable he's also getting forgetful and a 373 scream may seem like. 5.13 20+ years later: ) thanks again they'll be pulled eventually for a.straight. axel convervison on a 93 and ill let you guys know what I come up with then
