54 GMC Pick-up
Ladies and Gents,
Thanks for having me on your forum. This is definately the most professional automobile forum I have been on. I have spent the last couple weeks lurking and soaking up as much information and knowledge as I can. All of you guys' build threads are awesome, and reading them has taken a few of my nights away that I will never get back My name is Chad, and I am currently in the market for a project truck. I have my eyes set on a 54 GMC Pick-up. I am by every means a novice at older model GM trucks. I do have some experience in turning a wrench and doing some custom work. The last 12 years in the military have kept me away from my favorite hobby, therefore this year I intend on getting back to business. There is an older gentleman here in NC that is selling quite a few classics. This truck is the only one in my price range. However, I would like to get an outside opinion on value (the best you can from a couple pics). All comments, critiques and advice will be appreciated. -INFO- 54 GMC Pick up 407 with munsie 4spd was a daily driver until a few years ago but still runs & drives Asking price is $5500 Things you can't see in the pics -pretty old plywood bed -leather explorer seats -original frame Thanks in advance, I look forward to starting a build thread eventually and learning and contributing one day. |

Re: 54 GMC Pick-up
That looks like a real good buy to me. You need to look it over good & make sure its ot a patched up rust bucket. Check out the major components. You should know it will need a lot of fixing up. They all do. I wouldn't be proud of that wireing job, but those are the kind of things you can fix as you go.

Thanks for the comment. There are definately some things I will be fixing/changing. Overall, it has a frame off in its future. The motor came from a 70s Corvette supposedly, What do you guys think about that particular motor? Chad |

Re: 54 GMC Pick-up
How about this one !I
I like the GMC dash in the 54-55 as the one in the Chevy is like a car dash to me. I dont think they produced as many of the 54-55's, as the earlier ones, so you are finding one that is still on the road. I think will be a better investment and can be made to be excellent daily driver

Re: 54 GMC Pick-up
welcome, that's not a bad price, allready has a v8 and 4spd in it, less work for you to do, take a fridge magnet and check for bondo piles in cab corners and doors, good luck man!

Re: 54 GMC Pick-up
Thanks for all the advice gents. Solidaxel, dude that is a sweet truck.
I'm going to put it up on ramps and check the undercarriage, and do the magnet check this weekend. My eventual plans are to do a frame off, using a different frame/suspension/ and rear end. Install airbags, lay it on the ground, but not really interested in going extreme on the suspension. I plan on doing the frame and suspension separate while still being able to drive the truck. And later on move everything over to the new frame. I have a long road ahead, but I'm ready for the adventure. Thanks again for an awesome forum. |
