Have any of you painted your shroud...

or any other plastic area or part under the hood? If so, did you use high heat engine paint or plastic paint? My mechanic friend said to use the high heat engine paint. I thought about black dupli color paint thats meant for plastic. Is it ok to use the engine paint on hard plastic like the shroud? I am taking off the metal part on top of the shroud to paint it black. The shroud cleaned up good, but there are parts that are darker and shinier than other areas so I thought about painting it. Are there plastic cleaners or things that might renew it back to black? Here is the shroud below. In excellent shape, solid, with no tears or rips or pieces missing. Original GM part that came off a 74 like mine.

I'd use either high temp and fusion plastic paint.

I would use black SEM Trim Paint. Works great.

Ive painted quite a few plastic parts under the hood. Ive found the best combo is an adhesion promoter for plastics. A good high temp primer, and high temp paint. Adhesion promoter will allow whatever the primer and top coats are to bond to the surface. Therefore whatever your putting on after the adhesion promoter will stick pretty well.

Just be sure to clean the part extensively!!!!!!!!!! Any oils grease or even fingerprints when exposed to heat will cause the paint to bubble rapidly.

DWatts, I've read a few things online that say the same steps as you say. Also heard some will apply a clear coat afterwards to make cleaning the painted areas easier once its in use. would'nt the clear coat peel off easily or no?

Is high-temp paint really necessary? The shroud is plastic after all, I would think a regular (non high-temp) paint would survive any temperature extremes the plastic can.

Rough it up (or use adhesion promoter) and paint it. High-temp paint not required.
