NP 205 question

I pick up a 73 with a NP205 transfer case.

When I checked the fluids the Tcase was dry so I filled it up. After driving a bit I checked underneath and the fluid was leaking from underneath the plate the front driveshaft hooks up to.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Re: NP 205 question

You probably need a front output seal and/or a bearing cover gasket.
I'm not sure that the chain stores (Napa, Autozone, O'Rielly's) carry these but you can get them from quad4x4.com, offroaddesign.com or others.

I took the cowards way out. An hour wait and $96.00 at the local trans shop for a new seal and gasket installed.

Re: NP 205 question

I can't fault the OP. if he just needed it to be done, then $90 really ain't bad.

For those of us that have more time, I'll be buying the $35 gasket and seal kit from ORD to reseal mine.

Re: NP 205 question

not to mention you need a 1 1/8 socket (with a relatively thin wall) to pull the yoke which not everyone has in their box. just did my rear seal, I'm lucky enough to have the 1 5/16 to pull that one.

that and just removing that front shaft from the tcase can be a PITA on a 205.

$96 would be a good price around here. seems like labor at most shops is $79+ / hr.

Hehe, so now you are over on a Chevy site asking questions about your ’73 Dodge? That is okay, the NP205’s are basically the same anyway. Man, I love that truck of yours. It is CLEAN!

Well come to the forums!

Re: NP 205 question

Truth hurts.
Also I think if you own an old truck you need the tools to work on it.

I used to agree 100% with this... then I realized how many friends I have they make $ from people that CAN'T work on their own cars. so I guess I agree about 50% now. My neighbor has funded almost 30 years of automotive projects doing sidework for people that can't... so if you can pay, then please continue to!

this is the sleeve/seal you seek, rockauto.com had a few last month:
