70's 350 to Vortec style 350
Who has gone from a 70's 350 to a the new Vortec style 350? I need to know how much fab work was involved?
Questions: 1. Are the motor mounts the same? 2. Did it bolt right up to your 350 trans 3. Will my headers work on the new heads? Any other guidance or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Heath

I have not done it but yes to all 3 questions. The motor mounts and transmission pattern is exactly the same. The exhaust pattern is the same, but the ports are shaped a little differently. Depending on the header it should be fine. The biggest difference is the intake bolt pattern. You will definitely need a Vortec pattern intake.

Here is a 96 350 with edelbrock intake and in my 70 lwb. I have changed my mind and am installing a 468 bb now. I then too kthe 96 and installed it in my 72. runs sweet too.

The engine does accept a mechanical fuel pump in the normal place. I had a forum member machine an original temp sender to fit in the left head. I also found a pre-bent hard fuel line from the pump to carb that fit with some very minor tweaking and is period correct. I think it's the one made by The Right Stuff for the Holley equipped 1968 Camaro Z-28. If interested I can check and confirm. I have the original A/C system, and the brackets presented a challenge since the rear and top braces did not fit the Vortec head design. I had to fab those. Everything else bolted right up. DISCLAIMER... I have not yet started the engine. I should get the painted cab mounted in a couple weeks. |

I am currently doing this project, almost done.
Are you running the fuel injection or going carb? I pulled to old one out, boulted up to the th400 and back in the hole in a day (I took off the hood and fenders). Everything bolted up like the old one, my advice is replace all of the mounts with prothane mounts (energy suspension is developeing theres and are not avalable yet) and leave all of the mounts loose so you can get that 1 bolt that bolts in from the bottom. Things that have held me up were miscelanious, fuel line not sealing to the pump, old temp sender wont fit in the head and new temp sender has the wrong resistance, ordering the bronze dist gear, finding a waterneck to go over the temp sender.

Very nice, easy way to go serpentine also. I am going to get me one of these vortec 350's cheap and start building it over time. Save it for a future 67-72 purchase.

Or just do like I am and convert your original 350 to a vortec by changing the heads and upgrading to a roller cam.

Yeah, I don't have an old one to do that with. Them Vortec 350's are a dime a dozen and sell pretty cheap on C/L. Plus it wouldn't be going in anything anytime soon. I got a 96LT1 corvette motor in my 69 right now. Just a plan for a future truck for me. I want the engine before I get the truck. That how the LT1 found its way in to the 69...lol Going roller on a older motor isn't in my budget when I do things...lol

Makes sense. It was def more costly to convert mine but Iwanted to keep the truck with correct engine for originality. I would def take the route you are if Iwasnt after the origanal aspect. Sorry for grammar on my phone now

The only thing I see is if you use a carb you will need a electric fuel pump.The vortec motors are not machined for a mechanical pump but should be a straight swap other wise.I bet it will work great.

I used a delpi puimp from oreilly's(44.00 bucks). I mounted it on the right side of the frame. super quiet and works great.

It turns out I'm going to keep the older style motor. I'm having headers put on andr they are for non-D Port heads. Headers were $425 bucks. So, I'm not replacing them again. Blue Print motor from JEGS or from GM is the plan.
