Need some advice on some rust - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Okay well since i had the truck its had rust on the passenger side rocker panel
it had a hole when i go it
and some surface rust/pitting on the passenger floor
and whats looks like surface rust on the drivers side floor

I had got a grinder and tried grinding my passenger floor and used some rustoleum rust stopper and primered it, but as you can see it shows throught the primer

I was thinking of getting this

Also im going to have to take it to a shop to do it, i dont have a welder, nor grinders or big tools, how much do you think it would cost

If I'm seeing this correctly, you have some rust that's coming through the primer? You said that you tried to grind off the rust in the passenger floor board, right?

Rather than grind away your floorboard, why not take some 120 grit on a block and see if you can't get rid of the rust? Once you get it down to metal, hit it with some 300 grit, then a red scotch brite pad and spray it with some self etching primer. Let that dry, then hit it with some paint.

If you had gotten all of the rust the first time, then waited a day or two to spray the Rustoleum, it may have had a chance to start rusting again. Or there was some rust still left on the metal initially. If you've got holes in the metal that you can't patch, then buy the panels and have someone do it for you. They should be able to get all of the rust that way.

I'm no professional, so keep in mind that this is how I'd do it if it were my truck.

Well i did get a block and i think it was 80 grit or 220 grit, i then hit it with that rusteleum rust stopper, but there is some pitting in the medal and i think thats why it came back, maybe it didnt kill it, i also used some self etching primer but it still seeped out

The only way to get into the pits is to sandblast it. Then you usually find holes afterwards. You can try 36 grit on a high speed sander to remove rust as well but this also removes some material. What ever you budget for price, figure more. Rust repair is always worse once you start getting into it. Once you get the rust gone then etch it and top coat it with real automotive paint. None of that POR crap.

So i couldnt use por just over the metal?

That's why i always suggest some epoxy primer , and not the rattle can. Rattle can will look good for about 2 weeks if you are lucky, but if you had rust it will come back. I just never have any good luck with the rattle can primer. Even if you sandblast IT will come back.

Automotive primer(2 componenT) is what you will want to use. I have a car with some right now, and has not rusted in 5 years(long project).
