72 Opinions? (PICS)

Ran across this one...need some opinions, worth, what does not look right....

"This is a 1972 Chevy Cheyenne super 3/4 ton pick up. It is a clean old truck,looks great and gets a lot of attention. It has a 350 engine with holley 4bbl and automatic TH 400 transmission. I have put well over $15,000.00 into this truck,and about 2000 hours!!! Just about everything on the truck is new. The engine is an older rebuild,and runs fair. the tranny only has about 200 miles on the rebuild. It has factory a/c but needs new hoses,everything else is there and the compressor is good. Since I finished it about 4 years ago,i have put less than 300 miles on it,and it has never been driven in rain. I have come down and down and down on the price to sell it,but this truck is well worth every penny."

From what i have gathered by reading these types of threads, value of a truck is highly regional. While there may be quite a few restored trucks like that in Cali or Texas there are very few around these parts in KY.

Also everything is worth what somebody will pay for it. If I had a great motor and hated body work I would be willing to go pretty strong for that truck maybe $15K if I was looking for a 2wd cruiser. It definitely looks great, no doubt about it. If a fella just wanted to cruise around then tune-up the motor and go. With that TH400 its not gonna be "fast" with a mild 350 so if you want some low-end power then a BB is gonna be needed.

I am pretty much a 4 x 4 guy so I sure would love to have a 4wd rolling frame and BB that needed a body, I'd jump on that but not for more than $12,000 ish.

I doubt I said anything that you don't all ready know. Its a beautiful truck and I'm just saying the price depends on what you want and what you want to do with it.

That's a great looking truck! I don't care for the steering wheel, but that's just me. Looks like the engine has a breather/oil cap/pcv, deal going on. Would look better with the proper size air filter element also.

I think that's a pretty good price, especially if all the rust has been cut out of it.

Lot of things in the pictures that are not "correct". Without a SPID and a build sheet it would take more than these pictures even to go look at it. Does he have picture both before and during the restoration? If you want the truck thenvalue it as a driver. Its too bad to have spent 15k and end up so wrong.

To answer the "what looks wrong?" question:

Missing stainless trim on back window as well as most of the trim parts inside and out that make it a Cheyenne Super if indeed is a Super.

Engine brackets

Hubcups

Seat cover and steering wheel

That seems like a really good price if the body looks as good in person as it does in the pictures.

From looking at the picture it seems to be worth $8900. If I had that much to spare I wouldn't mind having it.

No SPID...no build sheet. What all can I tell from the VIN? Also, the engine is a 350 from 86'....AC is on the otherside.

Pretty good looking truck. It would look better if it had the correct 72 style paint job and upper trim like a real cheyenne super should.

Woah... wait a minute - I missed that this was your post - are you saying the seller is telling you it has no SPID? If that is so, you have a major decision on your hands - if you are at all concerned about originality, walk away. If you are not - then at a minimum make sure you confirm the VINs on the title/metal plate/frame. This could be a frankentruck. You can't tell anything from the VIN other than model year, v8 vs I6, 1/2-3/4-1 tonner, wheelbase, and assembly plant. The rest is just serial number.

The truck looks good. But no SPID and 86 eng, it wouldn't float my personal boat. That's just me. There is no denying that the truck looks real nice.

Judging by the pics, that's a pretty darn good looking truck. And a good price too.
But why only 300 miles in 4 years after all that money spent?
Also with all the $$$ spent I would do a better job detailing under the hood and get a real dashpad and steering wheel.
And those hubcaps have. to. go.

It happens, i built a 72 CJ5 many years ago, fiberglass body, 36 inch tires, lift, hard top, 31k mile 258/4 speed, posi rear. It was an awesome jeep, got 28 miles in 2 years. I just didn't like the ride, would go down the driveway across the field and back. Finally sold it for 1/2 what i had in it. Probably not a good investment. lol

It looks like there is a hole above the driver side a/c vent where a sending unit switch for the fuel gage would go. These came with a driver side auxiliary fuel tank. I don't see the fuel fill on the bed. Is this the original bed?

Well forum peeps....I have more pics!! The seller has just built the truck the way he wanted it....I wish he had went one way or the other (Cheyenne, Cheyenne Super), but he did a little of all!! Anymore opinions or thought are welcome. I think for $8900, it is worth a road trip this weekend with trailer intow!!

Depends what you want. It's badged with OLD Cheyenne Super emblems, but it's clearly not restored as one on the inside (no woodgrains on dash or gb - so wouldn't appear to be a Super / no woodgrains on the door panels, so appears to not even be a Cheyenne period). Would have to see the SPID to give you any reasonable estimate. I'd want to see the SPID to determine the actual trim level (I'm guessing this was a Custom Deluxe, best case) and also to see if it has a special paint code (i.e. the white/blue/white wasn't necessarily a 72 option without special order). Don't get me wrong - nice truck and the paint looks well done (in pics anyway) - but ya gotta look at the SPID to know what he's asking. If you don't care about any of the originality, etc - or potentiall fake emblems, (and that's quite alright as long as you're not paying for a Super...).

EDIT: Sorry VintageWindmills - I was typin while you were clicking "submit reply".... You already id'ed the woodgrain issue.

If it's a Custom or a Custom D - I'd estimate about $6-8K.
If it IS a Cheyenne Super, then you'll need to put some money into the interior (and it won't be cheap) but it'd easily be worth his asking price, perhaps more - $9-10K easily if a real Super and if the SPID has a paint code that reflects what's on the truck.

My opinion, it looks like an old truck with new paint and interior. I'm not sure I would call it restored, nor do I see 15k into it. The engine runs fair, needs AC redone, underside is original. I don't see that kind of price. I feel like you could go buy any old truck for 2k and put 5k into paint and interior and have pretty much the same thing. Maybe better? I'm thinking its 6k at best in my estimate. But if you like it, pay whatever it takes to make you happy.

As it is with all restorations, it depends on what direction you want to go with the truck. I think its worth 89(if its what YOU want), but I would have to spend some $ to get it how I want it. This is why its hard to flip old trucks, you have to find the guy that wants everything you just did. I would pass, but I can see somebody droppin 89 on that easy. But, as ABursell just said, if she only "runs fair" it would knock it down quite a bit. Id need it to be runnin great for 89.

I see you're in Texas. I dont know what direction you are wanting to go, but I've seen some nice trucks for sale around the state. Some more, some less. In fact, there is a nice Longhorn in Spicewood on CL. I would go with a documented truck.

I should point out that I am getting a truck for me and my 13 year old to tinker with.....after he turns 16 he will drive it to school. He will drive something else when he goes off to college. I will then retire the truck to the Hill Country. I just want a solid, rust free starting point. This truck would not need that much to be a "Tribute" Cheyenne, or Cheyenne Super. Correct the paint, trim, add the wood grain......tailgate is already done.

Correcting paint is not a cheap endeavor. That could be in the thousands of $.

Not sure why you guys value a cheyenne so much more over a custom deluxe in this case. A cheyenne or super isn't a big deal really. You just get little things, like woodgrain (which some don't like anyways), better floor and firewall insulation (which is long gone and easily improved in any truck with todays liner products), a cab light and a couple other minor things. Its not like the package included a V8, auto, AC, etc. I don't want to debate the trim levels, just maybe offer the suggestion to remove the cheyenne badges and make it a custom deluxe. Bottom line, if you want a cheyenne, maybe look elsewhere. At the same time, don't think this truck needs to be a cheyenne or super to be nice.

I agree with you on most parts.....but the tailgate is done, cab light is there, some badges are there....what to do????
