Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
Well I got bored and busted out some sand paper. I personally hate body work and hate sanding even more. Since my right door has some major paint peeling issues I decided to try and create some patina on the drivers side. Looks fake to me but what do y'all think? And please be honest with your answers, I want to know whether I should add more or do less on the passenger side. First the pass side door and the rest I helped along. Also what can I do better, I would like it to look as real as possible with little investment..

I think it looks fine, but you'll want to see what you can do to get rid of the horizontal scratch patterns.
Here are a few pics of my natural patina for some ideas Posted via Mobile Device |

Cool thank you. I'll have to work at that. It's a lot of arm work for sure.

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
If you have access to a da sander with a hook it pad a piece of scotch brite pad will stick to it and u can use it to even out the finger marks and lines. Plus it's a lot easier on the arms. I think youre getting there just needs evened out some. If you could find some paint that matchs the white on your truck to cover the red on the pass door then sand back through it to show some red like the drivers side I think it would look better. Just too much red on that side. I always like to lightly buff and polish it after sanded to give it a shine so it looks more natural. Here's one I did a few years ago that was my first patina job.

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
Another idea for you. The other day I noticed a stain on the side of my truck. Looked like some caulk splattered on it. So, I bought some Goof Off, and used a cotton terry cloth. It took the caulk off, but I noticed that if I rubbed too much, the paint came off with it. So, you may find that some Goof Off might give you a more natural patina without as much effort

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
A good Ajax wash will help too.. BUT it will dull the shine a bit.
Black wax on a white foam pad will blend things out too if you're worried about finger marks, etc. But, I think it looks good man. Is the whole truck red underneath?

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
Well originally the truck was a stepside but the original owner took it back to Chase Chevrolet back in 1972 and said he needed a bigger bed. They did a bed swap with a truck the was dark olive and painted the whole truck white. So the cab forward is red and the bed is dark olive. Later on when I go to repaint I will put it back to the original red orange.

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
What is this black wax? Is I like a rubbing compound? The white paint takes medium effort to get through but once through its real easy to burn through the red. I've been hand sanding with 600 and wonder if I should finish with 1200 and a good wax?

ROFLMAO
God, how I wish I could show you the aftermath of a genuine Earl Sheib paintjob, twenty years on. Unfortunately the vehicle is in pieces at the moment. Suffice to say that the paint started flaking of with a pressure washer. This is WHY my truck is called "Spot" by the way. Quote:

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
600 will take it off pretty quickly. I would do 1000 grit wet and then 1500 and wax. What I call 'black wax' is a compound made by 3M. It used to actually be black.. but now its just a buff color.
Same stuff really. Do you have a variable speed buffer? Try to think like the sun when doing faux tina. Where would the sun have faded/ worn the paint? Just looking at the pics, maybe add a little bit over the fender wells where they round out from the fender? Have fun with it man. You are going to paint it anyway right? Posted via Mobile Device

Oh, black wax and a white foam pad will be kinda like 2000 grit paper. Careful on the edges

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
Well Boog I was feeling the same way you do but I've gone back and worked the areas a little more trying to make it look more natural. I think it looks better ill post some pics a little later on this morning. The good thing is it needed paint either way so I said what the heck. So far my neighbors and co worker said it looks pretty good but I'm still not used to it myself. I appreciate your opinions, anyone else?

Re: Well I got bored......tell me what you think..
I know you've probably already read countless other threads regarding creating the patina look. One I recall combined different colors of rattle can paint or dull primer to get the look he wanted like gray, black and brown to make the rust tint he was after. It looked real enough.

What's funny is who would of ever thought that the "new" look was to look old. Any links boog? I have rubbed through some spots to bare metal so we will see how she looks later on this winter.

TRUCKS had an episode showing how to do a patina paint job, it was on a 47 chevy. But your driver side is looking good.
