Alternator question.

I replaced the alternator in my 82 today bc when i went home last night about half way down the high way all the lights started to dim and eventually shut off then seat belt light and buzzard went off. The new alternator is working good I checked all the wires and the look fine. My question that I have tho is when i took the old alternator to the auto store to get my core charge back they tested it and stated that it passed all their tests but the bearings were shot in it, so if this is the case could the bad bearings cause alternator to not charge the battery? Thanks for the input and advice.

Re: Alternator question.

bad bearings will not cause alternator to charge unless the alternator stops turning.
The alternator in most cases the diode trio and/or voltage regulator is starting to fail. This will happen when it's under load and hot.
When it cools it will run as normal or test good.

Re: Alternator question.

I had one that failed 2 hrs in to a 5 hr trip, stoped for dinner and had to boost to start. Then it was charging ok pulled out and drove the las 2 hrs home with no problems.
With noisy bad bearing will make extra heat in the alt case.
When it was core tested it's in a cool state. At this time the internals returned to normal running. It is then just a time thing till they fail compleatly.

So, would you say it was a smart thing for me to go ahead and replace it?
