Wood bed and leafs 1972
Hey guys I have a 1972 Chevy c-10 short bed 2wd ½ ton, and it has factory leaf springs and a wood bed. It also has upper and lower trim and some other options. I have never seen a ½ ton short bed with leafs. Are these common? And the wood bed in 1972 in a ½ ton short bed was this also common? I appreciate the replies, and in the future I will need to get a picture of the glove box for you guys to see.

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
O yeah, its not a Cheyenne, the idiot who owned it before me put those emblems on, i believe its a custom deluxe. I also believe the trim is all original.
When the weather gets better i m going to begin to get it road worthy, i have some fresh heads to through on and then i m gonna tackle some electrical. |

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
Nice truck,
You are correct it is not a Cheyenne nor actually red. The correct trim level is Custom Deluxe with the Highlander trim upgrade. The paint was originally Hugger Orange and White. While leaf srings and a wood bed are not unknown on shortbeds they are difficult to find. Here are a couple of color reference pictures and my Highlander blurb to fill in questions. Highlander Plaid was a trim only option based on Z62 or Z84 (Blazer only) optioned vehicle. In addition promo packages A,B and C were offered that bundled several options in addition to the Plaid trim. Thus a promo package truck was a Highlander but a Highlander was NOT ALWAYS a promo package equipped truck. Highlander trim codes All include black dash pad, steering column (with or without tilt) and carpet. In addition the door panels, visors, console (Blazer only) and seat belts were parchment (white). Seat vinyl was also parchment and the insert color is determined by the specific code. So the only variable color keyed component was the insert color of the seatcovers. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pickups Custom Deluxe Z62 mandatory option green 613 blue 611 gray 604 orange 618 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Suburbans Custom Deluxe Z62 mandatory option green 647 blue 642 gray 639 orange 651 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Blazer Cheyenne (CST) Z84 mandatory option green 680 blue 677 gray 671 orange 686 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Promo package codes A= YG6 Plaid Trim, Special Wheelcovers C10 (PA1) or Chrome Hubcaps C20-30 (PO3), Chrome Front Bumper, Upper (Belt) Molding, Door Edge Guards and Below Eye-Line Mirrors. B= YG7 Adds Turbo. Automatic Trans., Power Steering and Tilt. C= YG8 Adds A/C and Tint.

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
Thanks Tim for all of the information.
And, Yes, That is my seat and seat belts, I do have the black dash pad. I am not sure if the truck was orange and white on top or if it was the Orange, white , orange and white top combination. I would like to return it to OEM specs as much as possible, less the California smog equipment AIR pump and tubes. If this 1 ton is your truck, that is what I like, really love that paint combination,,,,, Thanks for responding and thanks to the forum!!!!! Also, do you know if that seat cover is available from one of the suppliers Like Truck Shop in Orange Ca or LMC Truck in Kansas ???? |

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
Glad you found the information helpful. Highlanders are among my favorites and I have spent a lot of time trying to clear up the option as to content, applications and RPO codes.
You are correct about the trim being original. The cab separation, the belt and the lower are called out on you SPID. The 458 paint code is a white roof and white between the body side moldings with everything else Hugger Orange. Your truck was the same colors and Deluxe Two-Tone as the CustomCamper/30 picture posted above. No it is not mine but almost was. Here is a different 458 truck. Sorry but most of my pictures tend to the heavy side. The covers are a problem. They are not a mainstream reproduction and it would have to come from a specialty supplier like Truckseats to get something close to original.

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
Id say that's a pretty odd truck, with the highlander option and the leafs and wood floor.... probably a low % with that combination?
I had a 72 SWB custom 10 (non deluxe) with wood floor bed, leaf springs, sport rear bumper, upper and lower molding, manual disc brakes, power steering, 250 6 cyl, 3 speed, 4:10 posi rear, rubber mat, radio delete, original black paint, 62k original 1 owner miles....odd ball truck, sold it in the mid 90's....wished I hadn't ever since. |

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
That sounds like an odd truck, 6cyl, 4:10's and all. It must have been an ordered truck.

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
I too have a shortbed 2wd with leafs and wish I had coils out back. But I do have a steel bed floor. I've seen many other posts from others with leafs, including some shortbeds.

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
XMitsu10, how did you lower the rear with the leafs? I know that you can flip the orientation of axle to spring pad relationship, but i would rather do it with shackles?

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
I am not a big fan of lowered trucks, but I do like this one in black. Plus if the stock look while not being original to your truck appeals to you, then be aware the orange Highlander trim in a black truck was available and I have a documented SPID as reference. However the gray plaid would probably be a little more acceptable to most people. Also would you please post a picture or two of your interior for reference?

Re: Wood bed and leafs 1972
SS Tim, I don't have any interior pictures, when i bought it it had the orange plaid and white vinyl bench seat which was completely deteriorated (this thing was a work truck). It was covered by a NAPA style redneck seat cover. It has a black dash pad and white door panels, with trim on the panels.
Before I knew what the Highlander Options was I painted the door panels black, ouch! But without too much trouble i can bring thees back to white. |
