quest for silence

after shouting at my wife in our crewcab for years, i finally decided to see if i could make it more livable. a big part of the problem- headers with 3" pipes & flowmasters, 38.5 swamps, & custom deluxe trim, a piece of jute & rubber floormat & nothing else.

now the real big part of noise reduction- mass loaded vinyl, & yes it's heavy, just over a pound per sq. ft & i have 100sqf. i also glued it down & taped the seams. this stuff is heavy, but suprisingly flexible

the fatmat is more for panel resonance, the foam & mlv are the real ticket to block noise. i also sprayed some expanding foam in the roof, (don't have a headliner to cover anything), & if you look at the fatmat pic's, you will see i also put a second shifter boot out of a dakota, as well as the new hurst boot on the t-case shifter, (205 whine at 55), & had some extra mlv, so i doubled it up on the front floor, also re seam sealed all panels, plus a piece of jute that came with the floormat.i'll see how it goes when i'm done, but with what i had, anything should be a big improvement

my doors, like the rest of the truck, have some extra holes to weld up before anything else. once i got that addressed, por15, fatmat, & mlv in them

Re: quest for silence

a couple of posts back i screwed up. i meant to say i want to change my interior to GREEN & black, not tan & black. that being said, i tried my hand at painting plastic for the first time. my console used to be tan, now it's

in my never ending quest for quietness, i lined the cup holders & inside with rubber to keep our pop & keys & stuff from rattling.also for the sake of quiet, i put a cig. lighter outlet in it so the kid can plug his video games in (works better then duct tape!). if i can scrape up some money for armrests, i think i'll paint the door panels to

Looks great, I'm curious about the results. Where did you get the closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl?

Re: quest for silence

What seats are those in the rear? That's exactly what I've been looking for. And custom brakets or are they stock from something? Thanks!

ahem, cough, cough, let me clear my throat, their leather, power, heated, king ranch seats out of a ford,- but they were CHEAP & in perfect shape. those are stock brackets. there's 6 bolts (4 on the 60, 2 on the 40), the 2 fronts hit the factory holes, the 2 back ones missed by a couple inches, made some quick 3/16 brackets, & the 2 middle ones i had to drill out. they do go threw the factory cab support like the other ones, but i also put 3/16 fish plates on them as well

Don't sweat it. There is another guy in this very forum with King Ranch seats in his truck, can't remember who. They look great though.

Re: quest for silence

You guys just made my day... My kids are just about big enough to get out of their booster seats and I've been plotting on how I'd make myself some rear headrests to protect them in the event I got hit in the back. That seat is perfect. Thanks and keep up the great looking work!

they flip up & fold down too. i dont know if you can see the booster seat marks still on the 40, my kid gave his up last yr. and him & his friends are pretty much the only ones who sit back there, so it was gr. 8 all the way. like i said, they were cheap, a couple of hours labor for them was the price & their worlds above the old clapped benches that were in it
