would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
im probably asking the wrong people but i dont know who else to ask. ive been thinking of something new and this sounds like the perfect opportunity. i just dont know because i know that my truck is pretty much brand new and that i did the work, and this wagon hasnt been messed with tooo much but it runs and of course its a wagon. what do you think?

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
Personally I wouldn’t, and not because I’m a truck fanatic. I like all kinds of stuff. But of the tri-fives the 56 just happens to be my least favorite.
That’s a very nice looking 63 and you know everything that’s in it. The 56 probably has potential to be worth more, but it also has the potential to need a lot more money invested to bring it to a level you’ll be happy with. I know long roofs are very popular right now, but having done several headliners, I would never want to install one in a wagon. With the hood trim missing, the front may have been bumped. Hard to tell from the photos but it appears the left front fender may be tweaked out a bit right over the tire. Just something to consider in the overall value picture of what you think both are worth.

Are you board with your truck?
I could see getting something else to tinker on, but I know I will never sell my 65 (again). Posted via Mobile Device

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
Im pretty notorious for buying and selling old stuff.
That said, if the wagon is fairly solid, and a driver, Id make that trade all day. Slam that wagon on some wheels and it'll sell all day long, and for more money. Of course, if the end result isnt selling and making $$, then disregard my statements. I can find longbeds all day long, and usually cheap. Finding a good solid driver tri-five wagon isnt near as easy and has a much larger market. I had 17 pre-66 cars/trucks in 2012... ![]() So its just my .02

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
you need to do what makes your heart beat.if i get excited about a rig and it makes my heart beat and i loose sleep just thinking about it then i do it. i've had small moments of sellers remorse a few times but most of the time i never look back. a guy can ask everyone what they think but it's your ride. personally i would do it just because i love a new ride and a new project, and old chevs are cool.

These trucks are becoming very popular but you can still find nice ones at a good deal , I would think the wagon would be a harder find these days.

Been driving trucks my whole life, never owned a car.
I'd keep the truck.

If that were a two door handyman wagon, I would trade for it in a heartbeat.
But not for a four door. |

I love Trucks and Wagons. Like Grumpy said you can find long beds all day long cheap but Tri 5s not so much.
I would do it. |

If it were a two door they wouldn't be offering a trade.

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
I like 56's. I had a few including a '56 Nomad. But you also have a pretty nice truck there. I would suggest that you try to buy the '56 instead of trading. Then you will know the answer in time and could sell your truck when you would be sure about your decision.

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
As has been said, Tri-5's are more collectible and in the end more valuable, but the 56's aren't the best looking and being a 4 door is a real ding on its value. I think I'd hold out for a Nomad, unless you're just bored with your pickup and want something to play with.

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
I have several Tri-5s and my business is selling parts for them. I have bought and sold tri-5s, wagons are desirable, if it is solid and runs and drives well, it doesn't take much to get $10k out of a 4 door wagon.
In the end, do you need more passenger room ? Or are you happy with the truck ? I currently run a 56 4dr ht, I installed a 305/700r4 and vintage ac, drop spindles and disc brakes, the car runs down the road awesome and gets 22mpg on the hwy. I have about 12k in it and it was recently appraised at 30k. I love my trucks (all seven of them) But this 56 is great for trips. I dive my 65 pickup all summer unless it's real hot, then the 56 goes, nothing like having fun with the ac on. By the way, most of my customers, whether they have a 55-56 or 57 agree the 56 is the best looking of the three. Last edited by 63burban; 01-10-2013 at 01:21 PM. |

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
you said your truck is almost new as you did the work or know what has been done. really need more pics of the wag. are you prepared to do the same to the wag as you did to your truck? to me thats the question.
about the 56 being the ugly duckling, i disagree. but i am a little bias.

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
It's actually all a matter of opinion. Some like the '55's best, some the '57's best, but personally, I agree with the above 2 replies, I like the '56 the best.

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
I respectfully disagree about the 2dr versus 4dr wagon debate.
Ive had... 1957 Chevy Belair wagon 1959 Chevy Nomad wagon 1960 Chevy Nomad wagon 1960 Chevy Kingswood 9-pass wagon 1960 Chevy Brookwood wagon 1956 Ford Ranch wagon 1953 Plymouth suburban(wagon) 1953 Pontiac Tin woody wagon all 4 door except the 53 plymouth I wouldnt own a 2dr wagon. Well, not true, I would. But I prefer a 4dr wagon. Slammed on the ground! Wagons are crazy hot right now. I could buy wagons cheap 10-15yrs ago. Now, in many cases, wagons are bringing more money than 2dr sedans. If I had a chubby to own a 2dr wagon, I would just buy another GM suburban. Ive had 4 60-66 Burbs plus a 61 panel And my 53 baresteel burb I built in 2007. Again, just my .02

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
I like the simplicity of the '55s and don't like the tail lights on the '56s, but if money wasn't an issue I'd have a '54 Nomad

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
You can make your own, I wouldn't destroy a 54 Vette and a 55 Nomad, but people have. The first time I saw one was at a show in Spokane, he said he used a Nomad and a Corvette, makes me cringe to think about...

I'd make that trade in a New York minute. How many trucks do you want me to go find today or any other day?

Re: would you trade a 63 longbed for 56 wagon?
As you get older the fours doors become more useful. Ever try to get into the back seat of a tri-5 two door hardtop when you are 6'4" 240lbs and 55 years old ? Try to put a baby seat in the back of a two door. When there are a bunch of people that are ready for a ride they all want to get into my four door ht before a two door.
In September I dove my 56 for my sons wedding, the whole wedding party was in there mid 20s and all of them wanted their pics with my car, no one cared that it was a four door. The photographer got creative with pictures of the car, she said she may never get another chance because weddings nowadays weddings just use limos. I told her to go nuts and have fun, I don't think she could hurt the car compared to what I put it through. |
