Throttle Sticking

I recently broke my throttle cable (custom setup). When I was replacing it I noticed my carb (Holley 4 barrel) was "catching" at a certain point. The throttle opens smoothly to a certain point then it catches and needs more pressure to get it opened up. It is smooth both before and after the catching point. I have an electric choke and didn't know if this could be at the point the choke is activated when it is cold? It has nothing to do with the throttle cable as it still does it with the throttle cable disconnected. Any ideas guys?

Re: Throttle Sticking

It’s been years since I’ve owned a Holley and I don’t know which type you have, but it sounds more like there may be binding in the secondary linkage than in the choke. I’d pull the air cleaner and with a good flashlight operate the linkage and try and determine at what point in the stroke binding occurs. If your carb has one, hold the upper air flap open above the secondaries so you can get a clear view of the rear butterflies. You might also look for something odd like a loose butterfly screw somewhere causing it to stick in the bore at some point. Also if either of the throttle shafts or choke shaft have some attached to one end with a screw, make sure that is tight. Having a loose screw on the end of a shaft can cause misalignment in the bore and cause sticking or rough operation.

One last thought would be to check the alignment of the carburetor on the base gasket to make sure none of the butterflies are running in to either the manifold or the gasket.

Re: Throttle Sticking

Thanks ,
This will give me a good starting point. I probably won't get to it for a few days but I'll let you know.

Re: Throttle Sticking

Make sure it's not catching on the gasket too, have had that before. You'll take the carb off and work fine, put it on and bind, take it off work fine, scratch your head. Sometimes gasket shift, sometimes it widens out from being smooshed over time. Catches the butterflies.

Re: Throttle Sticking

or catching on the air cleaner. I have had that happen before.
