LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
I'm trying to address the issue of fuel delivery to my '66 c10 in an LS swap. I will use a '94 s10 fuel tank (fits nicely between the frame rails) and I want to use an in-tank LS fuel pump. I have read that the LS motors require 58 psi and none of the earlier EFI pumps will produce this pressure. Has anyone mated an LS fuel pump to an earlier sending unit? I like to use factory parts, and will only use an aftermarket inline pump and filter as a last resort. Maybe there is a factory LS sending unit with pump that will drop in to the s10 tank. Or maybe there is an LS fuel tank that will fit between the frame rails. All the LS tanks I have seen will not fit. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response, Clyde65, but I'm going to try to use factory parts if at all possible. I will go aftermarket only if all else fails.

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
I just read an article somewhere in Car Craft, Popular hot rodding, Super Chevy where they put a fuel pump in on a swap on a LS motor.Go online look up under the magazine and under Tech articles. It was a good one with pictures.

You might want to check the diameter of the LS fuel pump compared to a TBI type fuel pump. I think all the fuel injection pumps may have the same mounting ring size, just the installed depth is different.
The older, non EFI senders are a smaller diameter. Let us know what you find. |

Bring your S10 sender to the parts store, and ask for a 94-96 Caprice LT1 sender and pump. That pump might swap into your sender, or the complete sender might work.

I'm using a Vaporworx setup in my 66c10. http://vaporworx.com/ It comes with a 5th gen Camaro fuel pump. It also addresses fuel starvation issues compared to an externally mounted pump.

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
I'm using a Tanks Inc PA Pump. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd84.htm . You can get any PSI setup you need. It's a walbro brand in tank pump with their tanks inc setup, Walbro pumps are pretty easy to come by if need one broke down. I would try and stick with the in tank pump. Run cooler and much quieter than external mount. Had an external pump and drove me nuts.
Also using braided teflon SS lines and fittings from pure choice motorsports to the hard lines at the frame. Very nice to work with. They also took care of my power steering adapters and lines. I used the LMC tank and adapted the pump in the top.

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Won't work. The LT1 pump puts out 40-43.5 psi. The LSx motor needs 55 - 58 psi. I speak from experience.

I tried this on a chevelle I did since the caprice tank is a nice replacement in the 70 chevelle. Even the impala SS fuel pump won't produce enough pressure.

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Thanks to all who have replied so far.
Redrocketal I searched all possibilities, but could not come up with the article. I wonder if you recall if they used all factory parts? If so, I bet that the suggestions from Blue666 and jayoldschool will provide the solution. I have several LT1 tanks and pumps saved from surplused police cars I have parted out, but I believe the LT1 pump output will be marginal for an LS engine. Maybe a LS pump on an LT1 sender will work, or as suggested, an LS pump on the s10 sender, and I can probably adjust the pump depth to work. Raic 65 I'll call your supplier on Monday. Thanks to all. |

Gabe2000 that's under the bed behind the rear axle and between the frame rails. There is a video on this on YouTube; type "1965 C10 Fuel Tank Conversion" in the search box.

Would you have a model number for the tank you used? Pictures would be helpful.

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Universal Pickup Truck Fuel Tank with Fuel Injection Tray - UT-N Series. I had difficulty with the line routing. because the opening it concave in ward. but its possible. got the fitting from HomeDepot cut alittle short to fit euongh for rubber gas hose to connect. use double clamp if your going to have fuel injection. The outlet pipe is exhuast pipe from autozone and went to the junkyard and got the rubber gas hose(2in wide?) from 2001 chevy truck. I have no leak and being using the truck for 1month. |

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Gabe2000 this is a well-established and simple swap, probably the easiest of the EFI swaps. Go to Painless Performance's website and look up part # 60101, which is the TBI harness. They sell separately the installation instruction booklet, which is very complete. The booklet guides you through the swap. You can order the booklet and then decide if you want to do the install yourself, or let some shop do it.
I have the LS fuel tank installation almost figured out, and I will explain what I found in the near future. |

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Ram153624 & Gabe 2000 and everyone else,
I found a great web page that can help us in our quest to use factory parts to build the truck that we want. All fuel tanks come with either a sending unit or a combo sending unit/fuel pump. As you change from carb, to TBI, to TPI, to MPFI, to DI we need to increase pressure & pump volume. All tanks also come with a lock ring to seal the sending unit or sending unit/fuel pump combo into the tank. If the lock ring on the new tank matches the lock ring on your old tank- your parts will interchange ( you may need to adjust for tank depth). Dorman Products makes replacement lock rings. This page captures the info on lock rings and tanks by model & year. If you click the green tab on the lower right of the page you get to the lock ring diameters. If you keep going, you can see the other Dorman products. Here it is ( http://www.dormanproducts.com/catalo...4FuelTanks.pdf You could also use the tank dimension to determine which tank will fit your truck, then go shopping at the junkyard. Ram153624, If the S10 tank fits where you like, check out using a Walbro pump from either Summit, Jegs or many other places. The pumps are direct replacements for factory pumps & your LS engine would need much higher pressure & flow than the 1994 S10 engine. Walbro makes both and several sizes in between. Also, I had the slant six in a Dodge A100. Hated the stock carb. Switched to a similar size chevy 2bbl carb also changed over to electronic dist in 75 or 76. Have a great transmission story on that one too. Good Luck. |

Re: LS engine swap into 1966 c10; fuel tank install
Blue666 and all others who contributed---
Sorry it took so long to reply with the info I have developed, but I was at a swap meet in Southwest Georgia the past couple of days, and I can post some good info on late model LS swaps in general. I bought a late model 70,000 mile takeout from Cox Truck, Moultrie, GA (800/476-1051) for $1500, a 2006 5.3 Vortec with 4L65E trans, with all engine wiring, with computer, with drive-by-wire gas pedal and TAC module. They cater to hot rodders and provide everything from the donor vehicle that we need to do the swap. I also called Speartek (765/378-4908) and John said that he will modify the factory harness, take out VATS, EGR, AIR and anything else not needed to make it a standalone harness for $450, and will reprogram the computer to work with the new setuip for $200. That is about half the price of the aftermarket setups. I am very suspicious about the country of origin of the aftermarket computers and components. With this method, we use factory parts. I know that many of the components used by GM are sourced offshore, but at least I think we can trust them to last. I have owned several LT1 Caprice ex-police cars and have put over 100,000 miles with no electrical issues. My ex-wife put 220,000 miles on a 1995 Caprice, an ex- Florida Highway Patrol car, with no electrical issues. I currently own a 1996 Caprice ex-police car with 140,000 miles and it runs like new. I bet it will outrun any police-spec Ford. Now for the fuel delivery. I used 2 well-written books, "GM LS- Series Engines The Complete Swap Manual" by Potak, and "Swap GM LS-Series Engines" by Bryant for source material. The 1994 S10 and many other fuel tanks, as Blue666 points out, have intank pumps with sending units that can accept LS pumps (58psi). There are many sources on eBay for these. The filter and pressure regulator I will use is the Wix 33737, used on the '98-'04 Corvette. To make the lines simple, I will use braided stainless steel from Earl's Plumbing with the hose ends that plug into the factory fittings. We must be cautious to use the new hose that will stand up to today's crappy fuel. Remember that these are nothing more than glorified rubber hoses, so check with Earl's to ensure that the hose will last. I will post pix of the install when I can get out there to work; it is still cold in GA I forgot to mention that the pump that Potak and Bryant recommend is the Walbro 340, which is readily available on eBay. I haven't ordered mine yet, but the pix indicate that it will be a drop-in deal for the S10 tank. With the S10 tank, Walbro 340 pump, Wix 33737 FPR/filter, and Earl's lines, this is the most simple and lowbuck setup I can imagine. Last edited by ram153624; 02-02-2013 at 07:34 PM. |
