250 inline six
Hey everyone. I am going to get a 250 l6 long block to replace original motor and just reuse tinwork and what not from old engine and i was considering the part store Autozone or orielly`s seeing as its more cost effective and only place nearby to get motors. unless order them online. But i don`t know if its worth getting them what are they like? anyone know how good these motors are? etc... thanks in advance and if you have advice for break in period feel free to share! really looming marshall 250 with integrated head from autozone its cheaper and orielly`s doesnt have integrated head

Re: 250 inline six
many of these got swapped out for small blocks and tossed in the junk pile but they are in no way a bad engine. depending on your gearing you may get 18-20MPG out of it and with a few upgrades they can be a sweet little engine. if you do plan on building it up, i would look for one without integrated heads (pre 1977)

Re: 250 inline six
WILL have to stroll on over to clifford then and check em out. i can get the 292 but no decision just yet maybe by end of the week. and cory d, ive heard that but no plans to build it up or anything.. a bit boring sounding but i`m perfectly fine with how it comes. idk tho gear ratio will have to do some checking buts its a 3 on the tree and seems to have a fairly low geared rear end

Re: 250 inline six
If you do go 292 be advised it doesn't use the same size lower motor mounts on the crossmember as the 250... one of them is taller, so you will need to change that mount over.

Also while I'm at it, I think the alternator bracket is different as well...

Re: 250 inline six
I'm still rocking the OG Integrated head 250 in my '78. I bought some nord-loc nuts to solve my blowing out exhaust gasket problem. Honestly, I would prefer a non integrated head 250, but the engine runs ok. Mine is a short bed step side with 3.73's in the back and a T5 trans. It's not bad...I really don't use it as a truck, except for the occaisionally helping a friend or family member move. I think I get 18 mpg on the hwy which is damn good for an old heavy chevy. With the old 3 spd, I think the best I ever got was 13mpg.

Re: 250 inline six
sounds like a cool rig. lilpoindexter, and 79 silverado i`m just gonna 250 and if i want something bigger later i will, that way i dont have the added headache something not bolting up right. thanks for all the input guys. ive also heard the new casting of the integrated head are not so prone to cracking as the original gm casting. ( correct me if i`m wrong just what i have heard)

Re: 250 inline six
I had a 292 in one of my old trucks. I would have that motor over a small v8 any day of the week. They run smooth as silk, monster torque, and will haul ass. I miss that truck. My 4x4 had a 250 in it when I got it. It was hooked to a sm465 and 4.10's.
