Truck squeals during acceleration
My 84 with a 305 is squealing when accelerating it's always had the squeal during initial start up that many of these trucks seem to have. The truck use to squeal when i first started it and then sometimes when accelerating but usually a quick hard acceleration solved that and it went away for the rest of the time i was driving. But recently it's started to squeal during acceleration all the time at a certain point it goes away but as soon as i hit a stop sign it comes back again. The belts are newer and set at the right tension. I'm thinking maybe alternator bearings? Any other ideas or thinks to look for? Thanks guys.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
The squealing I hear when I accelerate in my truck is from the tires!!! All kidding aside, it could be the bearings on any of the belt driven accessories you have.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
Has the water pump, altenator, power steering pump, a/c compressor been replaced? If so the alignment might be off, just enough to tweak something and get the squealing.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
Agreed. One or more pulley's are out of alignment, bent, fouled with oil or coolant, cheap belts, bad bearings, etc. Also check to see that the fan clutch is working properly and not stuck on or sticking.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
make sure your pulleys are al true. If they are just slightly off they will squeel to beat hell and eventually wear the belt until it breaks.......... ask me how I know. it was about 95° that day too when I was walking to the auto part store with the broken belt.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
water pump comes to mind...
do you have all the power steering brackets in place(the one wraps cylinder 1 manifold)? from the side view, the belts, do they turn in straight lines?

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
Bearings on something if the belts are fine. The bearings on my alternator went out and everytime I accelerated it squealed like a pig. Also hitting water puddles on the road bogged it down enough to squeal too. I got a lot of looks one day when it was raining.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
Nothing has been changed bought the truck over 2 years ago and the thing was sitting for about a month and half before it started squealing so it's not something out of alignment nothing has been changed recently the belts are several months old but still in good shape. it has to be bearings some where just need to know where all to check

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
you can use a broom stick,to your ear
hold it away from moving parts, but by placeing it on alt/water pump/air pump "case" etc you can sometimes hear it

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
You could spray some belt dressing on each belt while its running. That should tell you which one it is. Might even solve the problem.

Re: Truck squeals during acceleration
To add to the above suggestions, pull the belts roll each pulley by hand to feel for any roughness or bind, if nothing clean all the pulley grooves with a wire brush, re-install belts at the right tension and apply a small amount of di-electric grease to each belt.
The PS bracket is a great suggestion and a commonly missing piece on vehicle. |
