http://sd.craigslist.org/cto/3579661759.html

What do you guys think? Talk me out of it or talk me into the 400 mile drive.Talked to the guy and he says it has a factory tach and automatic. He didnt seem to know much more. Needs rockers, cab corners and the lower part of the drivers door. Not looking for a restore. more of a DD hunting pickup work truck. I do have a few parts trucks but all 2 wheel drives. My wife says go for it so I am looking to you guys for some help. Go or stay home?

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

Thats my hold up. Kind of a crap shoot. The guy says he put brand new wheels and tires on it but has never even tried to start it. Gave the old I'm sure the gas tank needs to be drained and the fuel pump is probably dried up speel. I do not intend on paying asking price. When i talked to him he also gave me the i've had a dozen people call me today.

Never tried to start it = engine seized.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

Offer a price, knowing that the engine is no good.
Get it, and buy a GM crate engine from Jegs for 1400 with free delivery.

As long as everything else is normal and in working order, with a new engine you'd have a solid 4x4 for a good deal providing you do all the work to get it running.

He is asking top dollar for a non running truck. Take cash, trailer and make a offer. If he want sell then drive home knowing you made the right decision. If he does sell you got a good truck for a good price.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

Looks like a nice truck...

I gave $3500 for a running, driving k10, no rust issues a year ago. Needed some small stuff, nothing major. And that was in a big metro area where everything is overpriced.

$2k is about as high as I would suggest for that. $1600 for a new motor and misc and you've got a nice driver.

Also u can generally find good sbc runners on Craigslist for $500 or less..

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

Thanks, I would think you could bring up to him that a motor is going to cost you $2000 and go from there.
I would guess knocking a grand off the price would be more like it, but thats one of those things though about how bad you want the truck and the fact K/10s around here seem harder to find.

I had to drive 300 miles one way and over pay for mine,, sooo how bad do you want it.?

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

If you take Hwy 14 I am in between you and the truck. If you need an extra set of eyes, and I am available, I will ride with. I am not a mechanic, but I know enough to be dangerous.

Edit: I just noticed the MN license plates. Get good pictures of the rockers, cab corners, etc.

The thing I dont understand is why would anyone invest a claimed $2000 into wheels and tires and then never attempt to get the thing running. Something doesnt seem right there.

Thinking the exact same thing. Like others have said, take a trailer, assume a bad motor, and don't pay his asking price. If he won't come down enough, be prepared to drive home with your cash in your pocket. 800 miles round trip is quite a drive with so much unknown, but it could pay off. Good luck.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

It will need more than rockers and corners, count on there being rust above the windshield under the seat and in the kick panels. So you want to factor in a new cab or a bunch hours to fix this one. I think you would be safe in the $2k range. Not sure why anyone would sink that much cash into treads for a non running truck?

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

That's a long ways to drive for a 50-50 deal. As a side note, typically a 3/4 ton 4X4 of that vintage has a lot of hard miles on it. Unless you can't find one locally, and that's the exact truck you think you want, I would keep looking. I drove 2 hours for mine, and paid a premium for it, but I love it, and I have not seen another one in similar shape in the last 5 years in this area.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

dan42 the trouble with this area is, were you live there are more people within 1 hr of you then there is in this whole state. I understand what you are saying but I just dont find hardly any 4X4s around here that havent been used as a ranch truck and have dents in every square inch. These cowboys are seriously crazy. If they cant get cattle in with their horse they go get the pickup and push them in.

I guess that's my point - if it's exactly what you want, then go for it. Mine had the original paint and I could see that the body was very straight, and it was exactly what I was looking for. If its what you want and the body is good, I say go for it - you will end up spending a ton of money on it anyways. My gues is on the wheels that he either got'em cheap at a garage sale, or had them lying around and is trying to boost the cost of the truck and get rid of something he didn't want anyways. I will say that if I were to get another one, one that has the original paint would be the way to go. Bodywork is the most expensive thing you can do.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

Could be the owner bought it from the estate with new tires/rims. I'm guessing he paid too much at the auction gambling engine was a easy fix and found something he didn't like. Doesn't want to put that much money in it so off it goes to craigslist. The paint probably looks better than it is due to the frost.
I would ask for more pictures before I'd drive that far and pay that much. Also without it running it's hard to say how the tranny is.

As far as dented pickups go... They are only bad if you try to fix them. If you leave it as is they are a good price reducer. lol

I go 400 miles to Fargo for school but I would not do it for just a truck unless I knew it was good.

Re: i have fallen in love with a craigslist find

If you want a cool roadtrip/memory then go for it. But I am with the rest, assume the motor is bad and maybe the transmission too. You already know there are rust issues. I would take $2500 cash and a buddy and have a fun weekend. If you get it, you get it-if you don't, you don't. Cost you maybe 60-80 gallons of fuel depending on your tow vehicle and 2 days road time.

Let me know. I have lived here (Brookings) for almost all my life, 30+ years. My dad is from DeSmet, they have a cabin on Thompson so I have been to Oldham a few times to grab dinner. I haven't seen much of the town, just the corner bar.
