A/C question....is this normal?
I've got an a/c question for yall this evening. Over the weekend I redid the a/c on my '82 dually with a reman A6 (huge!) compressor. The a/c cools very good but when the compressor kicks on I can feel it loading the engine when driving down the road. I've driven lots of square body styled chevy trucks & suburbans over the years, unfortunately none of them had working a/c to compare the operation to. The truck doesn't loose speed but you can definitely feel it engage/disengage when driving at highway speed.
Is this normal on these trucks? Or is the reman compressor screwed up? I have put probably 50 miles on it so far w/no change in this feeling or cooling (still blowing really cold). Scott Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: A/C question....is this normal?
I know I can feel it on my 400SBC...I just figured it was because it was a stock anemic little SBC and not an LS motor.

Not sure of the load that your compressor has on the engine but if you sensitive and power is stock. I don't see it not being normal,

Re: A/C question....is this normal?
Yes it is a stock 350 crate truck engine, if I remember correct it was rated at 260hp & 350tq w/ intake & headers. It's low hp compared to most new stuff but it pulls my trailers & tractors great.
I guess after awhile I won't even notice it Scott Posted via Mobile Device |

It's normal. The A6 is a huge power robber. However, it does work great!!

Re: A/C question....is this normal?
Figured out my a/c problem. After studying the system & seeing it only has a low psi switch, I hooked my gauges back up and watched it, sure enough every 10sec the compressor was cycling (what I was feeling). I added just alittle more freon (maybe 6-8oz) & just alittle more pag oil (1oz) just enough so the compressor would run continuous & only cycle once in a while. That made all the difference in the world! A/C cools better & the feel of the clutch cycling is virtually unnoticeable.

Re: A/C question....is this normal?
I did have a small leak where my the line from the compressor to the condenser when I first assembled it, snugged the line up tighter & got it to seal off. Really didn't think I'd lost much but evidently it was.
