gas tank relocation

I am sure this has been cover a million times, but what is the best way to relocate the tank to under the bed? i know lmc sells a kit but not sire how much fabrication that would take. Or what about using a tank from a same model year suburban or panel? where were the tanks located on those? Or is there and side saddle tanks that would work? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why move the tank under the bed at all? I just spent $$$ retro-fitting my tank back into the cab. The PO had put the tank under the bed.

Issues: The underbed tank hung down too far. The spare tire had to go into the bed. The filler system needed to fill the tank the PO created through the side of the bed was a total rube-goldberg mess.

Think about it before you go to all the trouble. FWIW

what did you do w/ the tank that came from out under the bed? i could use it,fabricate the filler neck to come out the back.can you help me? 66 chev. swb s.s. 5th wheel side mount. aka:"the beatnick"

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I am going to sell the rear tank, but for local pickup only. I don't want the shipping hassle of shipping a used tank. I will yank it out this weekend. I will list it in "for sale" section when it is out.

yea i can understand the shipping rules & regs. but how about the brackets & straps how much for those? and can you provide me w/ the dimensions of the tank lengthX width X depth.

it is a blazer fuel tank, we modified it to take a stock TBI fuel pump, relocated the filler neck to make it a straight shot thru the floor Kieth

Has any one tried using a side saddle tank from a 73-81 truck? I have a k10 and it looks like the crossmember between the 2 leaf spring shackles would be in the way for installing a tank from lmc, I really just want to get the tank out of the cab to free up space behind the seat

Having weight behind the rear axle helps the handling and weight distribution of our trucks............JMO Kieth

I am thinking of building saddle tanks under the bed/cab on both sides and use modified 80's style tank parts like Steet & Performance. They have a good write up on a pickup they put a 5.3 liter in. I want to install a 5.3 liter so I will need electric fuel pumps in both tanks and a different switch over valve and switch.

After an accident my significant other had in our '66 GMC and the way the cab was crushed on the drivers' side- I'll never have another in cab tank. It it hadn't been relocated, it would have for sure been crushed and leaked fuel into a cab she couldn't get out of.
My personal opinion is they are alot safer behind the axle. Putting the spare tire in the bed is not that big of hassle to me.

Again just my opinion and my preferrence, others have differnt thoughts and that's cool.

I'd move it out of the cab. Everyone has their opinions that's why we build our own trucks the we you want. The kits at brothers and LMC come with everything you need. Also make sure you get the right ohms for your fuel gauge. Yours is probably the 30 ohms.

I agree and you're right there are so many opinions on this subject, so do what you want. I won't have a truck with a tank in the cab.

the one to look at is losthopes truck that was in an acident. tank was ripped and he was covered in gas. but luckily no spark. and he is alive and well.

You can get this tank at two locations, mine is from Bob Drake, reason is it has a smaller filler so I could run it thru the frame by mounting the tank lower in the frame thereby keeping the rear bed sill in place, if you move the tank up to clear the frame you can`t keep the rear bed sill, not enough room. I used a filler from a GEO Prism, 1 3/8 size and the filler vent goes all the way to the top to prevent filling issues ( air pockets )

Same as Tanks inc other than tank filler and vent tube attached to tank, and filler is 1 3/8 size tube and has drain plug. Everything else is the same ,,,

My 3 cents.... If you're going for all out resto., you have no choice... tank in cab. ANYTHING other than a restoration, get that tank out of cab... Its a dang bomb! there's a reason late model trucks don't have a tank in cab.....side saddle tanks are only slightly less dangerous than an in cab tank... What if you get "T" boned??? The frame needs to protect the fuel tank, just like a roll cage in a race car.....
