Removed the patina from my 65
I sprayed some cheap paint on my 65 to cover and stop the rust ( some call patina ) . What do you guys think?
This is one light coat, I plan on another coat and a light buff, not looking for show quality but to stop rust and be a 20 footer so I am not so embaressed to drive it. I plan on doing the entire truck, the door and fender was just a trial run to see how it would look

Personally, I would have left the patina. For me, the original look is beautiful. Rust and all. My way of thinking isn't for everyone. Did you do any metal prep before the paint? Even a rattle bomb can turn out nice work with the right prep. If not, the rust will return...

I would have left it. But it's yours so you have earned the right to do anything you want with the truck.

I have to agree with the other guys - I think you should've left the patina. But your truck is super nice either way!

You can always take a gallon of thinner and remove the "cheap paint" to get the patina back. Mine was covered in gray primer (thank you PO for protecting it for me!). Took me about a gallon of thinner to remove it all.

I just bought a gallon of lacquer thinner. I just doused rags in the thinner and wiped off all the primer. You need to use gloves that are chemical resistant and use a mask. Again, use gloves that are chemical resistant and use a mask.

Thanks for all the responses guys... I sprayed a spot on my fender several months ago and it matched pretty well, I was impressed. It was just one light coat and I did not clear it or wax it, over a few months it "faded" and matched dead on with the old chalky looking original blue that was on the truck. I may allow it to fade and get somewhat of a patina look, but I cant look at rust all the time.... The hood has no paint and is just solid surface rust and that drives me crazy!
The truck is very straight, with only a few dings and almost no rot ( fenders are showing signs of rusting thru as well is the driver rocker, but most are rotted and gone ) I plan on using old side chrome that I gather up here and there and just go for a look that appears the truck is just old. I eventually want to do a complete frame off resto, but I have two daughters and my wife in college right now so the budget is very thin. I also want to enjoy the truck and drive it where ever I want and not worry about chips in the paint for awhile. I am also going to change it over to the big back glass and add all the optional stuff I have gathered for 20 years , so I think this is a good short term solution. It will allow me to continue to cut and drill as time permits without worrying about scratching the paint.... and look pretty good in the process. I have painted ALOT of things over the years and prep is the key. prep the surface, remove as much as possible to aviod overspray and tape the rest. The key to ANY paint job to make it look nice is details, if it is suppose to be black ( rubber trim ) dont paint it blue or allow overspray to get on it.Paint behind the grille the correct black and white, etc. these kind of details will make or break any paint job. These trucks are so easy to take apart almost anyone can get a nice job if they take their time.

Maybe on another one..... This was Grandads truck so I want to completely restore it one day, until then I am grinning ear to ear just driving it around and remembering Gramps.

I can relate and totally understand the "build to remember". I am building my 66 gmc short step to remember my grandpa. It's not gonna have the patina, its gonna be pearl white metallic and be on sir ride. Not exactly like the one grandpa had, just a good combination of the two of us. Looking good.

I think the new paint is a great improvement if it’s on a truck you want to drive and preserve.
I understand the popularity of patina. Repainting an old rustic barn would likely ruin its intrinsic and perhaps historic beauty. I just don’t happen to share the same enthusiasm when it comes to old cars and trucks, unless they are going to serve as yard art (which I fully admire and appreciate). In the time period I grew up a big part of restoring/fixing up a car was making it look better than before or perhaps even better than when it was brand new. High gloss shiny paint was essential to owning a cool car. Hot rod red or black primer was also acceptable as it indicated a work in progress. Many of the old cars I bought years ago had what is now admired as patina. What I really liked about worn out paint was the lack of fresh paint likely to be covering up rust or poor body work. I was thankful for having an honest surface hiding no sins. The thin/dull surface also made it easy to sand down and repaint with new materials, knowing there wouldn’t be any surprises underneath. When I do see a nice looking truck with patina, my only hope is the owner has taken some measures to preserve it as is, rather than allowing uncontrolled further deterioration. I can’t remember how many times I wanted to buy a neglected vintage vehicle only to be told “It’s not for sale, I’m going to fix it up someday”. And it never was. And decades later it had deteriorated so far it wasn’t even restorable. Upon reflection I think that is why I’m not much of a patina fan.

I have gone through the total restore and spent thousands of dollars on beautiful paint jobs only to have my heart broken when careless people door ding it, rock chips etc... Not to mention always worrying about the paint.
Now when someone door dings it, I'm like "Wow...that looks kwel!" |

I like patina when I see it but I'm not lucky enough to have a car that is original enough to have it.
I have learned something though... ...rusty cars are as offensive to certain people as tattoo sleeves and piercings! I guess I didn't realize it was a statement? My mother in law, aunt, mom, cringe at my Nova SS convertible because the back half is original white paint and the front clip and doors are original red paint from another car. They like my rusty 63 longstep better because the previous owner painted it in his yard(I'm guessing).
