Gas Tank

Well I think my gas tank has a hole in the top of it. I was filling it up today and when it got full I heard gas spewing everywhere. I'm guessing its the cap on the top? But I just wanted to know how do I take it off and what will I need to put a new one on, besides the new tank.

Re: Gas Tank

two jacks would help alot
loosen up the 8 bolts holding the straps to the tanks, once you get it down like 2-3 inches and can see the fuel lines loosen the hoses and drop the tank, dont forget the loosen the filler hose
my new tank i had to bend the the lips down, to get the straps to close, i ordered thru rockauto, make sure the engine is cold and no gas pressure

Re: Gas Tank

did you check your filler & vent hose too? might get lucky instead of dropping the tank. thats a fuel sender retaing ring on the top, you should be able to look between the cab & box & see if fuel is leaking out it

Re: Gas Tank

I tried looking in there but I couldn't see anything. I've got the 2 gas tanks but the other one is said to have a hole in it too or I would just use that one for now.

And I did look at the filler hose and it wasn't coming out of there.

Re: Gas Tank

also try and do it when the tank is close to empty
, what you can also do it probably loosen it like i said and maybe get a friend with a 5 gallon tank and tell him to put the gas in and while the tanks is lowered a lil you can probably see where its leaking from...

Re: Gas Tank

I'm pretty sure the hole is all the way at the top of the tank because it didn't do it until it got full. That's why i think it is at the top of the tank.

Re: Gas Tank

ya, do like frog says & have someone dump some gas in it. it just seems strange to have a hole on the top of the tank, it's always the bottom that craps out. i would be checking the fuel sender ring & hoses, check your tank straps to, if the strap gasket is gone, it could have wore a hole threw

Re: Gas Tank

if your fuel guage is working, there's nothing wrong with the sender, for the price of them, & being a '85, nothing sucks more than re-dropping your tank again if they stop working. if there's nothing wrong with the filler tubes, re-use them, but replace the rubber hoses & if your tank is approx. 55"-56" long, it's a 20 gallon, if it's shorter then that, 16 gals.

Re: Gas Tank

The metal return line on the sending unit rotted on mine..When I dropped the tank it was very obvious were the gas was coming from.

Re: Gas Tank

I got mine in from AUTOPARTS WAREHOUSE. Seems like good strong construction. Gonna put both in tomarrow. 160 bucks for both and are exactly like the originals but these are zinc coated

Re: Gas Tank

thanks guys for all the help. I'm just gonna have to drop the tank and figure it out. I have the dual tanks but the passenger one has a hole about 1/2 way up. I'm not worried about getting them both fixed right now though.

Re: Gas Tank

Now my gauge is acting stupid. It'll spin all the way around out of the hash marks and stay there for a few minutes but then it will come back around to where it should be. I'm guessing that's the sender?
