Driveshaft opinion
Ok my 85 LWB had a one piece driveshaft. My 87 I have now, has a two piece driveshaft. What's the favorite. Proc and cons of both ????
I was wondering because when I had the 85, I always thought the two piece would be stronger but never converted because I didn't have a problem. With this 87, I was just wondering if that is the case or not. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Driveshaft opinion
The one piece is desirable since it is more durable and less maintenance. Two piece driveshafts were for heavy duty trucks that could reach higher speeds with the bigger engines they had so two peice was don't to keep down critical speed ( the speed in which your shaft turns into a jump rope).
The longer the driveshaft the lower the critical speed, the bigger the tube the higher the critical speed. Say I put 5:11 gears in a long bed crew truck with a long driveshaft and proceed to drive as fast as possible on the highway. Well you would see some serious sh!t! The weakness of the two piece is that two peices are not as stable at high speed anyways and the carrier bearings can't hold much. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Driveshaft opinion
1 piece is cheaper, and if the drive shaft is light enough just fine for everyday use.
The 2 piece is stronger because the suspended section of the drive shaft is shorter, and it is less likely to get bent from use. That is why I have never seen a 1 piece on a 3/4 ton myself. |

My 1976 Swb 1500 heavy half had 2 piece driveshaft but I switched to one piece during my restoration

Re: Driveshaft opinion
Mine is an 84 K20 long box with a 1 piece prop, 465 trans and 3:08 gears. On the other hand, I have an 84 S10 that had a 2 piece prop with (I think 3:73 gears) 4 speed manual trans and a small 4cyl eng (2.2L??). Anyway, the 2 piece lost the center bearing and the owner tried to replace it himself and bent the drive spline part of the front shaft. No luck in the bone yard so I tried to get a new one, again no luck, so I got hold of a company here in NY that makes them $1200. NO THANKS very much. Searched the net and found a CO. in OK that made a 1 piece for me for just over $200.
Price was the deciding factor. I'll go back to them if I ever need another shaft.

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose. |
