NV4500 Swap Q's
Currently: 1972 3/4t 4x4 350ci SM465 w/205, 4.11 gears, keeping stock height, frame off resto now
I found a GM 94 NV4500, 5th gear fix, w/ 6.xx 1st gear w/OEM ext. slave bellhousing and 32 spline 241c T-case. ~$850 My driving will be 95% Road/Hwy and 5% off-road. I want a nice DD on snow/ice with occasional N. Idaho light off road. My questions being: 1. I'd like to save money and use OEM ext. slave bellhousing, can i do it with my use you think? 2. Is the 241 a better choice than 208, I have the option for either 3. Is the older style gear ratio a huge negative for road driving w/ the 350ci? I cannot find a new one to save my life! 4. I'll be going to a hydro clutch can I use the 73+ mc/slave 5. Hows price? 6. Or should I just do a Gear Vendors overdrive for the 465?? I've googled this to death and need just a tad more input on these issues, thanks!! |

2. it has an oil pump, 6 gear planetary, and the option to have a slip yoke eliminator. proven reliability with jb conversions. 3. first ratio is negligible. youll probably start off in 2nd anyways. 4. i am using the 85 mc/slave. on my 85 though... originally auto. 5. fair in my neck of the woods. 6. heck no. one thing i see is that 241 is driver drop. unless youve got plans for a 78-79 ford f250 dana 44/60 up front this will need to be addressed. also that np241 is VSS speedometer. only 1989 3/4 ton suburban and standard trans k5 were equipped with a mechanical speedometer passenger drop np241. ive had a couple, but they were harder than normal to find. also id be willing to bet youre gonna want to tire up from stock. especially with 4.10s. |

Re: NV4500 Swap Q's
I didn't think that Id like the ratio spread of the 94' that's in mine but I've gotten used to it. I'm not sure about mating the 4500 to your 205 though. I think you're going to have to get a different 205. Check out Dirty Larry's threads on this. I personally didn't even want to mess with mating them up. I ended up using a 2wd 4500 and the stock divorced t221. I also picked up a Dodge divorced 205 for 100$. Going to use this if the 221 ever craps out. One of the biggest issues is the stock hyd. BH. I ran it in mine and think I may be lucky. The front driveshaft is @4.5 -5" from the slave cylinder. I don't think they will ever touch but if they do, there are many fixes to remedy it.
