Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

Another member (HavinSomeFun) showed me a cool OBD II interface last year and I finally bought one. It came in today, so I figured I'd share. It is made by PLX devices in Sunnyvale, CA and it is called the Kiwi II WiFi wireless interface for iPhone (there is also one for Android). It can provide quite a bit of info: Check Engine Diagnostics, Real-time Gauges, Fuel Efficiency and MPG, Engine Sensors, Customizable Dashboard, Real-time Dyno, Data Logging, GPS Track Mapping, Skid Pad. Video Recording and Data Overlay, as well as a iMFD Aftermarket Sensor Interface. I took my truck for a spin and clicked a few screen shots, now I need to learn understand the info it's giving me!

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

I've been using something like that for awhile with a normal ebay OBD2 bluetooth adapter
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Mini-E...684648&vxp=mtr

and the "Torque" app for my Droid.

I'm pretty excited to get my Megasquirt up and running in the truck, since I'll be able to scan and log via bluetooth, as well as actually flash the ECU via my phone, ipad, PC etc over bluetooth.

I bought the one in the first link and it won't connect to my pcm. I tried it on my dd and didn't have any issues, any ideas?

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

Being able to make changes would be great, but at this point I would be hesitant to do so, I'm no efi guru. It's very cool to have such great tools available to us though.

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

Mine was $115 plus the price of the app $39.99! Pricey in my opinion, but I like the way it works. The one that Wasted Income posted is like $13-$14 for the adapter plus the app $5, so only $20 total!! Your an android guy right Rob?

As difficult as getting with my tuner is proving to be, I wish there was an option to make some easy changes such as tire size and gear ratios.

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

I agree, the technology is incredible. Even at $150 to get in the game, it's SO much cheaper than a set of gauges, and is so much more powerful.

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

I saw a truck at a car show with no gauges. Ill try to find the picture.

So you could run this and have a completely bare dash....What about gas gauge??

So Wasted Income, are you able to make changes to the ECM for tire size and such?

If I could do that I would think about buying an inexpensive Droid based touch pad just for the truck. Otherwise I like my apple products.

With my megasquirt ECU...yes.

With the factory GM ECU and android app....no.

I use my EFILive setup for all my stock ECU tuning needs.

To tune...you need a laptop, a wideband, and lots of time to figure out what you're doing. haha.

I imagine it is a good bit to learn. I'd just like to be able to make small changes like gear ratios and wheel/tire sizes. Not sure I's spend $900 to do it, but right now I have to get in touch with my tuner, who is freelance, and hope he can make time for me. I've wanted to make changes for a few weeks now with no luck. It is a pain...

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

Morning guys. On my '84 C10 LS swap, I used the Torq app and Ebay Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, all for a whopping total of $18. It was invaluable when getting the truck started and checking to see my tps opening, temperature and rpm's. Best part is, its an Android so once I bought the app, I simply reloaded it to my Galaxy Tab and now I have a bigger display...hmmm, maybe I can figure out a way to mount it permanently.

I'm surprised that neither HPT nor EFL have made an iOS app. (unless they've just done it)

Don't care about that Android stuff...

Re: Engine Monitor for Smart Phones

Those Bluetooth Android adapters can be found for under $5 now, but I thought the Pro (not trial) version of Torque was $25 and did have the ability to make some standard tuning changes like for tire/gears (not mapping fuel or killing VATS though)

EFILive, which does handle that, ran about $600 last I checked, but it can even fix the VIN number stored in an AFTERMARKET/SERVICE REPLACEMENT computer to match your number--computers pulled from junked cars cannot have the existing VIN changed.

If I was going to put an OBD-II compliant system with port in my truck, I would in a flash drop in any Android based "Touchscreen dash" I could get my hands on. Ive seen tablets that would do permanent duty that way, for $49 at Big Lots when the maker clears out old stock.
