To blast or not
Has anyone used kbs coatings on their truck instead of blasting. I am trying it on my frame to see how it works. Would like any advice on this I can get.

I'd say its a question of what sort of build its gona be, how much $ you got to do it, time, how far its going to be taken down etc. Quick wire brush and rustoleum is better than letting it rust away.

Have an old 48 Chevy with a lot of surface rust. Am making a mostly original daily driver and would like it to last me from now on. Not a show truck. Just a solid driver.

I guess there are not very many people using KBS on their builds. I was just looking to see if anyone could substantiate the claims made by KBS that it really kills rust. Thanks anyway.

I used it on some of Big Bertha (bottom of cab and floor boards) and it has been on ther a year now and is holding up well. I think is is a pretty good product but time will tell.

First time I have heard of KBS coatings but if you have that much rust I'd say have a competent blaster blast it. Ask to see examples of their work when you go to inquire about having it blasted though. I'm going to have to have the cab I'm building for my stretch cab blasted but my Model A (currently a rust bucket) will have to be dipped because it may be more rust than metal. I'll probably have one of the local powder coating shops blast my truck cab as they do that quite a bit on bodies on Chevelle/Camaro size bodies. Not inexpensive there but they do good work.

I bought a quart of KBS for my '55.2 but I haven't used it yet. I plan to scrape, degrease/scrub and wire wheel my frame, then use the KBS. I'll try a small area and let it dry a couple days and see how it looks.
I do NOT plan on using it elswhere except POSSIBLY on the underside of my floor if there is much surface rust. But if I do, I'd cover it with 3M rubberized undercoating. |

I am going to do the complete frame and suspension with the kbs, my dad and I built a fence with oil field drilling pipe 30 years ago and all we did to them was wire brush with a drill and paint and they are still there. I feel that what ever I do with the frame, it will out last me, just trying to figure out about the rest of it. I am leaning toward sandblasting the cab, but am always open to advise as this is my first resto.

hey busjockey, I've been using KBS products on frames for about 4 years now. Excellent results, but with anything prep is very important. If your going over rust try and knock it down 1st with a wire wheel or a brush and alot of elbow grease. Be liberal with the spray neutralizer. Also, you want to make sure that your 1st coat is a light one and your 2nd is a little heavier so you have a nice base and that the product flows better. Using a soft brush also allows you to control where your material is going and will allow the smooth look once dried. Best used above 65 degrees.

I just bought a KBS kit that gets in today. I plan to clean my chassis this weekend and possibly start coating the rear end, leaf springs and hopefully frontend parts, then get to the actual frame early next week. I was going to do it outside (still cold here), but I guess I'll try to do it inside with the heater and just vent the garage...

Was going to start last weekend but got cold here. Want to wait for a warmer weekend. I want at least 70 degrees. I have the frame stripped and will do it first. Then add all the parts back one at a time after using kbs on them. Will post results after I finish.

On my frame I pressure washed, scraped and wire brushed it. Used Eastwood rust converter and the Rust Encapsulator and then painted with Chasis Black (satin). I have no issues with it, but it has not been in the weather yet. Still have a ways to go.... My frame paint seems to be pretty durable. No scratches from me stepping on it and storing parts on the bed portion.

KBS coatings are great products but do take heed in the warning regarding the wearing of protection. I have used POR15 and other products but KBS really kicks the crap out of the others! I used it on my frame, I followed directions exactly as described and it came out great . As far as concerns regarding the finish ,mine came out smooth as if it were sprayed on. Several of the guys who frequent my shop looked at it and after admiring it they purchased it and I have yet to hear a complaint.One guy who used it on a frame for a rock crawler which conditions of use are extreme compared to ours in the truck worldloved it as it has taken the abuse and held up surpisingly well.
When I did my frame I did wire brush the whole thing until it was nearly perfect then apply the coatings. I used foam brushes and took my time . |

thanks for the feedback. Am going to try to start mine in the next week as soon as the weather is right. Will probably do mine in sections, as I have the frame on an engine stand where I can rotate it. Will post results when I finish.
