going to track tonight

Gonna run the truck tonight at the track. They are having a midnight drag race, 12-4am. I will post times tomorrow. I would say maybe 15.50, but we'll see.

GOT TRACTION??? I sure as hell don't. Man was there some cars there! There must have been about 100-150 cars! I got 2 passes in. First was 16.856 @ 80.91 and the second was 16.564 @ 80.17. Could not get any kind of traction! Was not what I wanted to see, but not too bad. Oh yeah, lost both races. Oh well at least they were both to Chevy trucks. The first was a 88-98 model single cab, he ran a 15.54. The second was a new body style extra cab, he ran 15.92.

I bet you had a blast, huh??? I'm itching to go again!! AHHHAHHHHHH I just like the thrill. What a RUSH!!
You need to tighten up the suspension and get better tires. What are your 1/8 times?

I would like to take on those trucks you ran against.

2.73 gears with peg leg rear end, 400 trans with shift kit and a 2000 RPM stall (no use b/c too much tire spin) Engine stock bottom end with 268 cam, Edelbrock performer EPS with Edelbrock 600 carb, 14" K&N filter, stock ignition with Proform HEI distributor,Summit headers, with 2 1/2" exhaust, Flowmaster 50 series delta flow, exhaust cut outs at header collecter Holley red electric fuel pump bout it I think

Have you thought about deeper gears and a posi? I picked up a half second when I went from 3.42 open, to 3.73 posi.

Wow man, you must NOT have got traction! My 93 Saturn SC2 (automatic) ran high 16's@83mph at the track the other night. That gives me a good indication of things..because my truck (basically same as yours, sans cam.) will SMOOOOKE my saturn. I can't wait to take mine to the track.

Here are my best 1/8 and 1/4 miles runs.
Reaction time: 0.5065
60 ft: 2.5362
330 ft: 7.1448
1/8 ET : 10.9928
1/8 MPH : 64.08
1/4 ET : 17.1033
1/4 MPH : 79.95
New times.
Reaction time: 0.7684
60 ft: 2.5803
330 ft: 7.0815
1/8 ET : 10.8483 loosing traction (10.6 dial in)
1/8 MPH : 66.01
1/4 ET : ?? guessing probably 16's
1/4 MPH : ?? guessing in the 80's

Not bad for a pegleg 305, huh. I've got the itch to try the 305 several more times before retirement. The 1/4 times were with a 100 lbs tonneau cover too! the 1/8 miles were without the cover which reduced traction but gained nearly 2 MPH at the 1/8. If the track had been open for the 1/4 that day it would have been fun.

What kind of trans are you running? I would love 3.73's, but right now this is my daily driver and could not afford the gas for that. Right now I'm getting about 14 MPG and having to fill up twice a week. But that is the next thing on my list is posi rear end and new gears. Also, some type of drag tires.

I have a 4sp auto in my truck, but I wasn't suggesting that you go with 3.73's. But 3.23's or 3.42's would help a lot. even a 3.08 will help. Drag tires will help, but they do increase driveline stress, so just make sure you take precautions in that area.

MPH is the determining factor in how fast the vehicle is ....In this case ...the #'s are not that far off. My Grand Am GT runs 16.0@86 all day long. with 2.4 60's spinning all through first gear.
Fun though huh

This tells me alot about my buddies '82 swb. He runs consistent mid 15's and has a best of 15.07 in the 1/4. He has a tired 350 with only bolt on performance and a 700R4 w/shift kit. Now get this, he is running only 7 full cylinders. #8 fires when it wants to.
With all this talk, I can't wait to get mine to the track now. Gotta fix this shifting problem first though. Truck won't shift to 2nd until 2500rpm and 3rd until 3000rpm. Any ideas?

Wes,
Are you talking about WOT shifting? If so that's low. If it's normal driving and shift that high then you got trouble. Back off on the adjustment.

How would you "tighten" up the suspension? Add traction bars.
