What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

As some of you know, I do not speak engine the way some of you do.

Below is a copy and paste of the description of a truck I want to bid on.

The builder has only done 2 test miles with it.

It had amongst others a rebuilt Turbo 400 gearbox, means nothing to me.

So my question to the mechanically minded on here is...... are these mods etc all good, or am I looking for trouble, if I should export the truck to England where the same support and knowledge for these trucks does not exist.

As always, any advice and comments greatly appreciated.

The truck has a $14500 Buy It Now price tag.

This is a 1965 c-10 short bed chevy pick up, has a rebuilt 350 small block, 4 bolt main bored 0.60, speed pro pistons, lunati .465 camshaft and lifters, 062 vortec heads, clevit bearings, lunati timing set, all new apr hardware, rebuilt turbo 400 tranny with b&m shift kit and torque converter, all new bushings in front A-arms, new ball joint, shocks, springs and brake lines, blasted and painted frame new oak wood and stainless strips in the bed and new stainless hardware, new wire harness threw out the whole truck and not a cheap 13 circuit jobs, it was a 500 dollar kit and will come with all the schematic's , all new power brake update with rotors, calipers, master cylinder and proportioning valve, all new lines, new fuel tank that mounts under the rear of the bed , new power steering update with new steering gear box, pump and lines, recovered seat, new carpet, and door panels, all new chrome bumpers, bezels etc, paint is about a 7 out of 10, has a few bad spots but not to noticeable, have lots of pics if you want or new more just email me, i spent 12,000 in parts alone, runs and drive great, had the new windshield installed on Tuesday.

Re: What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

What is listed are all great components for a SBC build. Of course, the final build quality comes down to the builder's attention to details. You could have all the best parts in the world and end up with a terrible running engine. On the other hand, you could have a basic rebuild with average parts result in a fantastically well-running engine. Nonetheless, the seller is spouting out the right words!

Re: What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

That's a sharp looking truck for sure, a little hot rodded but not really a full custom. I see the front disc was done and ugpraded to power brakes and later style power steering box. This truck already has a lot done to it that most here would do after they got the truck. Nice color bed wood. I wouldn't say he's asking too much, and his auction implied that the reserve is less....maybe you can offer him less than 14500 cash now and he'll take it.

Good luck either way.

Thanks for the reply.

I like the mild custom work.

Agree on doing stuff after buying the truck.

I'm also into the bed wood.

What does the gearbox offer that one would want?

Re: What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

Rian,

Looks like a pretty good truck. Couple things bother me. First off all the money and parts spent on the truck and he didn't bother getting a gas pedal or rubber for the brake pedal. That's kinda weird. Also in the 3/4 view pic of it sitting on the lawn it looks like the bed is misaligned with the cab. May just be a bad pic.

That should be a very strong engine if it was built correctly. And the TH400 if in good condition is very strong. They put these behind all the big blocks from the factory.

Hi Bret
Trust all is good at home.
Thanks for the reply.

I agree about the bed allignment. Saw it and found myself looking at other photos and decided it was not set up right.

Have emailed sellerand he says its body off chassis job. However there are bits that look a bit rattle can as well.

Re: What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

Since this looks like a truck that is being put together somewhat in a hurry for a quick sale, my first concern was why is it being sold. But the first sentence establishes the legitimacy of why it is partially incomplete. It appears to be a beautiful build. If it belonged to a member here I’d have nothing but positive comments to offer. It seems fairly priced to me, although it would be nice to see more exterior photos of the body with the doors closed to see how all the body panels line up.

The Turbo 400 was the standard heavy duty GM automatic transmission for many years. It’s nearly bulletproof, is big and heavy, but doesn’t have modern overdrive. The only flag for me on the engine is being bored .060 oversize. Generally this is the max overbore and I prefer to not go more than .030, leaving the opportunity to do it again some day in the future if necessary. Some engines overheat with this much overbore, while others last for decades and never have a problem. As said earlier it’s all a matter of how much talent went into the build.

Admitting it is the first step to recovery.. No really..

If your not sure about this truck, find a gearhead buddy to check this out with you, or a local mechanic you know.. It may be worth paying a mechanic a few bucks to check this out for you.

Yeah, its the odd little things like when the did the seat they didn't bother to repaint the brackets. The outside paint looks hazy like a quickie $500.00 special. The underside looks rattle can all the way.

That's beside the huge amount of spelling errors makes me think its some kid trying to make a fast buck.

I don't like buying other people's modifications. I would much rather by something stock, and do the mods/maintenance myself. That way, I only pay for what I want, and I KNOW it's done right. Not the way for everyone, but I like it.

Keep looking! THere's better trucks out there. He's not even the owner, he's the guy who built it for the owner. Strange the owner would just turn over the title. That tells you what it's really worth. About half the buy it now price.

Re: What does all this technical gibberish on a rebuilt truck mean??

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I guess it is another lovely truck as long as I have not spent money on it, and coul be "the one that got away" ultimately.

However, in my case, being sight unseen, having a shift kit that could make it slightly less pleasant as a cruiser with crisp changes etc, it may just be better if I walk away and keep on looking, the "right" truck is bound to show up some time.

THIS IS THE EBAY AD TO GET A BETTER LOOK.
