Edelbrock, Holly, Carter????
My old heap has some carb issues maybe. Currently have a 1405 Edelbrock on there and it sat many years before I had it gone through by a mechanic.
But the long and short of the question is: If you had a choice of a new carb and were currently using the 1405 and just wanted a replacement without having to change anything else, which carb would you choose? It's an old '64 with a 283 motor and a power glide trans. Don't drive it a lot, more for puttering around town. That's not to say that someday I might not go the long distance drive with it.

I love my 1405 once got it the jet and rod kit to lean it out, are still running the stock jets and rod I useing .095 jets and my rods I forgot, but up in kingmen so air is thinner. I get about 13 mpg most freeway at 60, 55 mph. It on 350 with with turbo 400

Now, I have never bought one... was really close when my old Barry Grant Silver Claw was giving me fits. Is a Quick Fuel Slayer 600 cfm. I did my research and even talked to the techs at a car show. Impressive carb for the $$$$. My next SBC carb will be a Slayer.

I'm a big fan of Quadrajets, too. A Q-Jet that has been tricked out by a professional shop can be great carb for performance and gas mileage. They are a complicated carburetor, but in the hands of a pro like Sean Murphy, Brad Urban (RIP), or Bo Laws, they kick butt.

I ran 1406 manual choke no problems on the 283. Traded out for a 850cfm thinking it was a 750 for the 406 and it was too much gas at top end. Went with 670cfm Holley Street Avenger manual choke and it responds faster and pulls harder. The throttle response is a lot crisper.

I run the 1404 on my 283. After leaning the cuise mode a couple stages, it has been great.

My 63 Galaxie 390 came originally with a Holley 4 barrel. It ran horribly and leaked like a seive. I didn't know much about them at the time, but the problem was likely just a blown power valve. I replaced it with 3x2 Holleys off a 406. They leaked like a garden hose so I sanded the metering blocks down until they were flat and absolutely loved the performance. I later had a spreadbore double pumper on my first 54 Chevy 283 conversion. It was probably the best single carb I ever had, but it went away with the car, and I couldn't afford to replace it.
Since 1974 I've had nothing but Carter and Edelbrock 1405/1406 AFB's. They may not be the optimum racing carb, but they are easy to set up for a street engine, have no gaskets below the fuel level to leak, and run almost indefinitely with little to no maintenance. My current carb is a 1405 (manual choke). It was purchased in 1992 and has been through several adjustments depending on what's been done to the engine. It's never let me down, and has achieved as high as 16-18 mpg depending on how the rest of the engine/transmission was set up. If I had to replace it I'd get another 1405.

I'm running twin 1404 on my BBC 454 and they work great. Once adjusted they are easy to maintain and work well around town.

I also run a 1404 with manual choke and it runs perfect. Only needed idle adjustment and thats it. I also used Edelbrock 1" phenolic spacer and the carb never gets hot. The 1404 flows slightly more the the 4GC carb from the era.

Another vote for the Edelbrock. I have a 1406 on my 64' 350.
Also run a Holley 770 Street avenger on my Caprice with 383. It has much better throttle response and power, but it has to be maintained a lot more. As Mark said the Edelbrock has no gaskets below the fuel line to leak. Only thing I hate about the Edelbrock is all the little Cotter pins that hold the linkage that you have to take loose to take the top off. Dropped one in the carb once. Bret
