Insurance?
This is a question for you guys that own an older truck, use it like a truck on occasion, and don't store it in a garage. The wife and I are looking for an insurance company to insure our 63. We don't have enough room in our garage for her Impala and our truck. We have not yet found a company that will insure us without it being kept in a garage or using it like on truck on the occasional weekend. You guys have any suggestions? We are expecting pretty low mileage/year and have an Antique plate on it. We are all ears. Tell us what you think.

Re: Insurance?
my wife was a state farm agent for 15 yrs and she said that they insured older vehicles like ours and yours all the time with very low yearly rates for that age truck...might give a local state farm agent a call...

Re: Insurance?
I just went through this exercise for my 1966 c-10. I have State Farm now so I checked with them, Hagerty and Grundy. With Grundy I got the most insurance for the cheapest price and they had no limit to the mileage I could drive my truck.
I would say check them all out and compare. Very easy

Re: Insurance?
Its amazing how much insurance companies discriminate against people for where they live. I figured I'd see what it would cost me when I'm ready. I checked grundy and haggerty. My first go around.. I went in and said that I wanted a 25K value, 6k miles per year. secure yard (gated) but carport. For my actual location in S. CA. Grundy wanted $1800 per year and Haggerty wanted $1680. I tried a second time, increased value to 50k and unlimited mileage, park in driveway, but checked for NW Washingon (somewhere I would like to move to). and the costs were $600 and $450. Now tell me that that is fair. Just because I live in S. CA they want to gouge me. I've never had an accident, never had an insurance claim, and my last ticket was more than 20 years ago. So they charge me triple for half the coverage?!?! |

Re: Insurance?
I will give state farm a try Monday. Grundy, hagerty and progressive all require storage in a locked garage or storage unit. Thanks again guys. Keep the suggestions coming while I give state farm a call.

Re: Insurance?
I think you'll either end up looking for "regular" insurance, or paying a little extra because of "non-secure storage".
I know some will even charge a different rate if you have a shared unit garage (like an underground etc), vs a private garage.

Insurance is the biggest discrimination allowed by law, Your rates depend on whether your male or female.

If "what " you are costs the company more money on average, you get charged more. If "what " you drive is crashed more, stolen more, raced more or totaled more....you pay more. And if you live in Califoria....you pay more. but thats just a tax on the fact that you get better weather, hotter women, more interesting botanical products (actually you lose to Colorado but I'm trying to be nice).

Re: Insurance?
Our biggest problem is that we can't put it in a garage. The wife's Impala takes up all of the space. That was the whole reason I started this thread. I can find insurance all day long, if we could put it in a garage. We can't, so I was trying to find other options that may work for us.

Re: Insurance?
I've got geico, and my truck isn't parked in a garage either. I don't think they even asked. Hagerty wouldn't insure it because it wasn't in a garage, and could be used daily. Progressive wanted way too much money.

I have usaa and my truck is not garaged, although I'm building a 25x50 ft barn for it right now. Runs me $30 a month

Re: Insurance?
If you have the space for it you can either buy or lease one of those cargo containers converted for vehicle use instead of building anything.
Now another reason ins. is so high in Cali is the amount of people living there, the majority of the people that make up WA are on the west coast.

Re: Insurance?
If gambling is illegal then Insurance co's should be illegal. I know it's a necessary evil but I still don't like having to pay for their golfing trips to Hawaii or those hi-rise office buildings that are so purdy. Before anyone pop's a cork I have a few friends that work in the industry so I have a little insight. Century 21 seemed about the best price to me. I don't drive many miles and I keep it in the shop. Also I am re-tired plus they check your millage but that works out for me. This is also the min required in Idaho for 3 vehicles @ $200 yr..Vernski

Re: Insurance?
Hey guys,
Please don't overlook the "actual" versus "Agreed upon" value. I could get my truck insured locally for $45/month for "actual" blue book value, which, in it's current condition, is $19.50 short of a $20. OR, I could insure it for $5,000, 1500 miles a year, must be in a locked garage, for $90/year. When I was younger, I had my Nova insured for $5000, or so I thought. I got T-boned, but not too badly, they wanted to total the car since the repairs exceeded $1200. I was also paying $140/month...
