I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
Question time.
I'll be doing a timeing cover seal and ready sleeve on the balancer of my I6 in John Lee (65 C10 with 71 Olds 250 block) When I had Ol John Lee (64 C10 w/283) I installed the ready sleeve and seal and drilled/tapped the crank snout for a balancer retention bolt. Being as how the I6 balancer is also a press fit, its been rebuilt once and now starting to drip, I'm considering drilling and tapping the snout of my crank for a similar retention bolt. A security measure, no sense in fixin the weep at the snout and then throwin a pully off because the interference fit has transformed into a slip fit! Anybody out there done up the snout of an inline six with a retention bolt like can be done to a chevy V8? Looking it over, I'm thinkin the same Mr. Gasket retention bolt for the V8 would work likety split on the inline 6. If not, a shorter and/or smaller diameter grade 8 bolt and washer could be rounded up. Holler back with yer experiences. Thanks in advance. |

Re: I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
I already have the ready sleeve, the 64 283 V8 repair sleeve is the same one for the 230/250 snouts based on my research.

Re: I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
Been done over on stovebolts too....SBC bolt and washer with the fine 7/16 threads is the recommended way to go.
http://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/...&Number=642133 Guess I'll put this together for a winter project and might as well do the oil pan (big blob rtv there), timing gaskets and a spanky new water pump as long as I have the front off this ol boy. |

Re: I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
did a bunch of these in the 283 and 327 v8s, you can measure the i.d. of the balancer and get the correct drill guide bushing at most any industrial supply, tap the balancer in place slide in the bushing and keep it perfectly centered as you drill.

Re: I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
Yep, did this recently on my 250. Actually found the snout already had a taper that had the same angle as the tip of my drill bit. I used a bit that was the same width as this taper and drill my pilot hole about 1.5" deep. Then I used the correct tap size bit to finish it up and then tapped it. Came out perfect.

Re: I6 Balancer Retention Bolt Modification
Lookin like this is the same as when I tapped the snout of my 283 in the 64 C10. So, just need to wait till the weep turns to a drip and I'll have and excuse to remove the rad and get to it! Meantime, Guess I'll round up the V8 bolt and washer and put em in the kit with the tap and drill from the V8 job.
Thanks all for the confirmation. Another project on the list. |
