Porterbuilt steering rack , question?

Is there supposed to be a crush washer or something else that goes between the rack ,and the fitting that the hoses connect to? I enclosed a couple of pics. Its leaking pretty good between these two connections the pressure and return lines.

Its not leaking between the hoses and these fitting just between the rack and the fittings.

Re: Porterbuilt steering rack , question?

Are those fittings provided by Porterbuilt? I appears to have a packing (white Teflon ring) on it already. Do you what production vehicle the rack is from?

Re: Porterbuilt steering rack , question?

Many power steering fittings today are metric o-ring. For instance my truck has a 97 corvette power steering pump witch uses 16mmx1.5 o-ring and mi steering box is an 86 C10 witch uses 18mmx1.5 o-ring. Given the late model look of the rack I would check to see if it in fact need that style fitting, which is made by earls or russell and available at places like summit racing or jegs.

Re: Porterbuilt steering rack , question?

Tapered pipe threads get teflon tape.
Straight threads get a gasket.

That white gasket should make the seal,... but Unisteer include Loctite 545 (hydraulic thread sealant) with their AN fitting kit.

Re: Porterbuilt steering rack , question?

Guess I'll try Teflon tape and see if that fixes it.

Danny-

The small teflon o-ring should be sufficient and seal right up. The fittings we supply in the kit are a standard thread to AN fitting that Unisteer makes. Does it feel like they thread into the rack tightly? Or do they feel sloppy at all?

Feel free to call us or email directly so we can help you get this leak figured out.

Nate

I re-did the Teflon tape on the threads and all seems well. No leaks so far ,think I'm all fixed up. Should be on the road and painted before the end of the year.
