Any idea if that tranny can be used with a factory bench seat. Does the shifter come through the floor far enough in front of the bench seat?

Mine did on my '61 Suburban.
The shift handle is the interchangeable kind, so you might have to hunt around to find one... I changed mine out, but can't remember if that was simply because of my preference or because a curved one hit the seat.
I went with a straight stick from a Mopar van--the Mopars came with this trans, but with the Mopar input shaft they don't interchange; tail shaft housing is different too. The shift mechanism doesn't interchange either, but the handle does.
The Mopar van handle is almost straight up and down, just bent a few degrees at the bottom. It has plenty of clearance in my truck.

It can certainly be used with a bench seat if you use the proper shift handle, one with the funny bends for a tri five chevy sedan works fine.

When I had a bench seat, the shifter would be against the seat in 2nd and OD. Nothing bad but I had the bench seat all the way back. I now have buckets, so no problems.

This recent thread discusses that problem for both manual & auto shifters and offers a few solutions. The shifter handle for the Tri 5 Chevy looks to be a great option.

"This GM version of the A833 was called the MY6 and was an overdrive trans (3rd was 1:1, and 4th was .73 OD), and was used in Chevy and GMC pickups and vans about 1980 through 1986. It has a GM bolt pattern, and the input and output splines are "standard" GM. same length as a Muncie, etc. It was produced by New Process (a Chrysler company) for GM."

Was this trans used in any other year/model?

What are your thoughts and experiences on this transmission? How long have you been running it in your truck?

I enjoy driving it. I have a 350 & 4.10 rear. It works well in city driving (not too steep in 1st). I have plenty of power in OD but it cruises well also.

I have had problems with my old homemade shift rods but purchased some from another reader here.

How about the bellhousing? Were you able to use the '60 - '66 piece or did you need to use the one that came from the donor truck?

I believe the front bearing retainer can be machined down to fit the early bellhousing.

It seems to me that it was member Par4Tom that has done this.

I have the bell housing shown in the picture. It looks possible to use a Muncie or Saginaw behind this bell housing but I never tried. The MY06 has an unusual mounting face.

I purchased the trans, shifter & bellhousing together.

I think I can answer a lot of questions on this trans;
I've been running one in my Suburban for almost 70,000 miles and am VERY pleased with it.

There are two bellhousing/cases; one with the Mopar mounting pattern as shown above, one with a traditional Chevy mounting pattern.
The Chevy mounting pattern style will work on regular Chevy bellhousings, but the O.D. of the bearing retainer plate must be turned down on a lathe; I BELIEVE it was .250-inch. Easily do-able, but you'll need to use allen head bolts on the retainer plate, as hex head bolts will interfer with the bellhousing register hole.

Shifters are specific to those transmissions; There are at least two styles, maybe three. I know there are two Hurst shifters, and I think an Inland.
The difference in Hurst shifters is the diameter of the shift rods (smaller and bigger), and that difference requires a different spacing for the fingers that come out the bottom of the shifter mechanism.
I had my mechanism rebuilt by Hurst, and it works like butter. WELL worth the money.

There are two bellhousings with the Mopar trans mount: one for mechanical clutch linkage, one for a hydraulic slave.
On my '61, with the engine mounts on the bellhousing, I used the stock '61 bellhousing with hydraulic clutch, fork on the passenger side.

The Chevy-style main case is aluminum.
The Mopar-style main cases come in aluminum and steel. Like their Mopar cousins, the steel case is stronger and will take more power. The counter shaft on the aluminum case transmissions registers right in the case, with no bearing or bushing. Under big power, the Mopar hobby has found those transmissions to eventually fail because the aluminum gets wallowed out. The case can be machined for a bushing if you want. Again, almost 70,000 miles on mine, many unkind, and no problem. I've got a 290hp crate engine.

The tail shafts all interchange with one another. TH350/700r4 yoke, rear seal and speedo drive.

I just picked up an iron case version with bellhousing and shifter, for $100 at my swap meet. I nearly broke my arm reaching for my wallet.

I've got 3.42 gears in the rear, and 235/70/15 tires. Honking along at 75-80mph, I got 17.5mpg on a 10-hour road trip this month, empty. I get better if I plod along at 55... but it's a lot more fun in the left lane passing people in a 50 year old beater like they're standing still.
